Yizkor Books at Congregation Neveh Shalom

Copyright (c) 1999, 2000 Michael Steinore

Introduction

This page is an inventory of the Yizkor books in the collection of the Branford P. Millar Library at Portland State University (PSU). The Millar library has generously loaned their entire collection of Yizkor books to the Feldstein Library at nearby Congregation Neveh Shalom on an indefinite basis. The Feldstein library has regular hours of operation and is staffed by Librarian Hilde Jacob. Please see Congregation Neveh Shalom's web site for contact information. Other than the accuracy of this inventory, all inquiries regarding these Yizkor books should be directed to Congregation Neveh Shalom.

The Yizkor book collection consists of more than 120 Yizkor books, making it the most significant collection in the Pacific Northwest. The books are part of a larger collection of 35,000 books in PSU's Middle East Collection, approximately 10,000 of which are Hebrew titles. Much of the collection came to Portland from Israel via the Library of Congress, as a result of the Camp David Peace Accords. Under legislation enacted at the time, Israel and Egypt were allowed to retire some of their debt to the U.S. in the form of books published in their countries. Thus, the collection has been at PSU for about two decades, but it remained known only to a relatively small number of people until recent months.

Inventory

This inventory was conducted in February, 1999 and all the information below is current as of that date. Note: there is no absolute guarantee the inventory is complete. The inventory is organized by the country in which the town was located (there may be a few errors here), and then by alphabetic town name. Each entry follows the syntax below: The bibliographic detail originates from PSU's shelf list index cards and from my physical inventory of the material. This was then cross-checked against various lists published on the World Wide Web and the list of Yizkor books published in From Generation to Generation by Arthur Kurzweil.

Glossary of Abbreviations

Special Note: This collection of Yizkor books is in fine condition. Some of the books have special shtetl map inserts, in addition to maps that are published on various pages or inside covers of the Yizkor book. If this is the case, a [Map] indication appears in the bibliographic syntax.
