As most of you know, the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was used in WWII. In fact, it was used throughout the whole war in all theaters of the war, from Europe to the Pacific. It was also the heaviest single-engined fighter of the war, coming in at an average of 17,000lbs. Many pilots regarded it as a too heavy, too sluggish, and too ugly.
