Warped Tour '99 Review

ok heres my review of the Warped Tour '99, here in Portland on Tuesday June 6th 1999...now to me this thing has always seemed a little over-produced and whatnot...i mean the amount of stands and booths is pretty crazy (there were at least 100 there)..the dat started off at a low point because me and the five people i went with had to take the bus down there...so we ended up having to walk a loooong ass way to get to Portland Meadows and we walked around this seemingly endless dirt road till we saw it...not a very conveniently placed complex for bus-goers...so anyway, we walk in and weve already missed a few of the bands on the main stage (if i remember right, i think it was Gob, The Living End and someone else)...nothing special anyway...when we walked to the main stage H-Blockz were playing...seemed like pretty generic pop/punk/hardcore stuff to me but with a stand-up bass player...nothing special...then came The Black Eyed Peas, who are more of a straight rap thing...kinda reminded me of maybe Digable Planets ('member them?) or Dial-7 without the rock guitar...seemed pretty peace-oriented lyrics...overall, they were ok but nothing super-exciting...so me and a few other people walked around, got drinks, picked up free shit, etc and when we got back one of the bands i had been waiting for came on, THE DROPKICK MURPHYS! fuck yea dude...if youve never heard these fuckers pick up their debut CD, Do Or Die...its killer skinhead oi/punk/hardcore/celtic crossover music...fucking awesome.. they played the hits off Do Or Die as well as some new songs off of The Gangs All Here...the new singer does the old shit really well...heres the setlist (what i can remember):

Dropkick Murphys set

so after the legend of a set that was The Dropkicks, along came Sevendust, one of my fave bands of all time..Lajon was singin great as ever... if you havent heard Sevendust theyre a heavy-assed metal/rap/funk/soul crossover i suppose, with the majority of it bordering on metal, of course.. they opened with a new song i didnt know (the lyrics were something like "to the left, to the right") and it was heavy as fuck too...they played another new song that Lajon dedicated to Lynn from SNot (R.I.P.) and he announced that the new album, Home, will be dedicated to him...oh, and during "Too Close To Hate", in the middle of it, they played the chorus part of PanterA's "Walk" and the crowd went absolutely apeshit..anyway heres the set:

Sevendust's set:

so after Sevendust, along came Less Than Jake...this band is ok i guess..they have alot of energy...i used to like em a lot more when i was a little skater kid, so i recognized some of the songs...the singer was dressed as that gay fitness guy, and they used voice samples of him over the speakers...there was a dancing guy in a skeleton costume, and some guy in a monkey mask (??) that was jumping around on the speakers shooting the super soaker..so heres what i knew of their set:

Less Than Jakes set (what i knew):

next was Lit, who really sucked...i dont see WHO can like these guys except the trendy girls who listen to them...anyone who thanks MTV and 94.7 KNRK have to be sell-outs...anyway, the only song ive heard their set was "My OWn Worst Enemy" and he announced the names "Ziplock" and "A Place In The Sun"..but who really cares what their set was right?? next was The Vandals, who i actually pretty much decided to pass on cause they werent all that great..only song i knew was "Oi To The World"..so after that came Eminem who was ok i guess...it was good to finally see his live act after owning the CD for quite awhile...they had the giant inflated mummy on stage and the plastic (?) mushrooms set up by the DJ's kit.. highlight was hearing Eminem pull off a cover of Dr. Dre's "Nuthin But A G Thang"..a classic song..ok heres the set (or what i remember of it)..

Eminem's set:

so after Eminems set was Pennywise who were pretty good...i was surprised..ive never been a huge fan of them but always kept my ear open for what they do, and their set was killer..heres what i knew/remember of it...i wish they would have played "Open The Door", "Peaceful Day" or "Kodiak" though..

Pennywise set:

so next up was Suicidal Tendencies who were pretty damn good, these guys have been around for years and are the originators of H20/Pro-Pain/Biohazard-style hardcore...i didnt see all of their set cause i left the stage to get a drink but what i saw was damn cool...i wandered up to the second stage at that point and caught the majority of Zebraheads set...i kinda think they shoulda been on the first stage though, the second stage was kinda small and they had no pit...oh well...highlight was when they covered "Berezerker" (remember Clerks??) and when they broke into a Skid Row cover (i dont know the name of the song but it was funny when they did it..people yelled out for Poison, Metallica and N'Sync covers as well..)..heres what i saw of the set:

Zebraheads set:

so i went back up to the main stage and caught half of Blink-182's set (maybe more)..they were same old same old, ive seen em before. but hearin some of the new songs was cool...heres what i remember of their energetic and funny set (one of their roadies proposed to his girlfriend on stage)..

Blink-182's set:

after Blink-182 i was damn tired but i had to stay for Ice-T...i couldnt wait to find out if he was gonna play some Body Count material...not that i dont like his rap stuff but Body Count is the shit.. he was really damn good...i didnt really like the new song he did but i liked hearin the old-school stuff for sure.. the pit went nuts for Body Count's "There Goes The Neighborhood"...fiercest pit action of the day i think, which is surprising cause it was hot and everybody was damn tired i think...heres all of the set that i knew:

Ice-T's set:

well, overall it was an ok day...some bands good, some bands were only ok...i left the Portland Meadows to the sound of the Bouncing Souls playing one of their songs...we all went back and got drunk :)

P.S. if some of the bands are out of order dont criticize me for it, i am writing this review for a show that i saw about two weeks ago ok?
