A Josh Brolin Interview, by Christina Kelly. “Jane Magazine”, 1997

Q: Tell me about your role in Nightwatch.
A: God, I forget... To the best of my recollection, it revolves around Ewan McGregor’s character, who is a law student. Some serial murders are happening around town, and slowly the evidence starts pointing toward him. Yet, we the audience, know it is not him. I think my character is the easiest to point the finger at, only because he is the most obvious emotionally tormented person. I think Flirting With Disaster is the only other movie where I’m happy with my work.

Q: You live on a ranch in California, right?
A: No, I live in Arizona right now. I lived on the ranch until about seven months ago. I still have the ranch, but I live in Arizona. I don’t know where I’ll be living from month to month. Next week, it could be back to New York.

Q: Why Arizona? Q: Do your kids see your movies?
A: My 9-year-old son saw Flirting with Disaster. He thought it was hilarious. But they’re not usually around this environment. They don’t come to the set. When I was a kid, my dad kind of separated us from the whole deal. The other day, someone said to my son, “Isn’t your dad a movie star?” and my son said, “No he’s an actor.” And I love that. Not meaning, “No he has more respect than a movie star” but “No, he’s just some schmuck that does that for a living.”

Q: So I’ve read that your mom met Clint Eastwood as soon as she got to California. How?
A: I don’t know. But I know that she came from Texas, ran away from home. And she met this couple, Clint and Maggie, who basically took her under their wing. She was a wild lady, she was all over the place. So they kind of watched out for her. And that was a 39-year relationship.

Q: Did she meet your father through them?
A: I think she met my father when she was assistant casting for Batman, the television series. My mother’s boss was a good friend of my father’s, and hooked them up. Ten days later, they were married.

CK: That’s crazy.
JB: It lasted 20 years, which is pretty amazing.

Q: So, um your first film was Goonies. Did you keep in touch with Corey Feldman?
A: No, I have no idea where he is or what he’s doing.

Q: What section of the newspaper do you read first?
A: Business. And I don’t say that to sound smart. It’s just true.

Q: How did you meet Debbie?
A: Next question.

Q: Okay, um, what’s your favorite movie ever?
A: My favorite movie ever? Leolo.

CK: Oh! I saw that movie about the little crazy boy. The ending really freaked me out. I really like movies about mental illness.
JB: Totally. What does that say about us, though?

Q: Hmm. So have your father and Barbra Streisand set a wedding date?
A: I have no idea. They don’t mention it to me. I just watch the news, and if I hear something, I call him and say “Is that true?” and he says no.
