Cowboys had a code of honor that they stuck to through thick and thin. Trail bosses and cattle barons would trade thousands of cattle on the strength of a handshake and a promise to pay and deliver.

Rule 1
A cowboy seldom says please and sorry, but he always feels much obliged for a favor and will thank you kindly.
Rule 2
A cowboy never talks ugly in front of ladies and always tips his hat.
Rule 3
When riding up to a ranch or homestead a cowboy shouts out, "Hello the house" to make his presence known. He will stay on his horse until invited to dismount.
Rule 4
Before entering a cowboy unbuckles his gunbelt and removes his spurs.
Rule 5
If a cowboy sees a stranger on the trail he rides straight toward him and says "Howdy." Veering off the trail looks suspicious.
Rule 6
A cowboy never asks another cowboy about his past.
Rule 7
A cowboy will risk his life to save his partner.
Rule 8
Cowboys will be punished for bad behavior by doing all the dirty jobs or by paying a fine.
