PTA

The PTA is an organized group of parents and teachers striving for the betterment of the students. All parents and faculty at LAS are PTA members.

The last working committee comprised of Mrs. Susan H. (Pres.), Mrs. Ingrid B. (V.Pres.),and Faiza A.(Treas.). They did a fantastic job of making the PTA work. However they resigned on May 12, 1998, so that other parents and teachers could also have an opportunity to work on the PTA.

The new working committee met on May 15, and decided to work with a broader base, encouraging everyone to participate. This is a major objective this year. Everyone is welcome to join any committee at any time of the year.

The PTA will meet on every first Friday of the month at 12:30 in the cafeteria. The working committee, which is actually a facilitation committee has the following members: Shiro P.,Talat S.,Shanti R.,Qudsie M.,Azra S.,Erum A.,Shahine S.,Mary P.,Pat F.,Tahira N.,Mrs. S.,Maha A., Susan H., Mahjabeen N., Marty M., Jerry C., Naveda K., Kathy G.

A belated Mother's Day Coffee was arranged by the PTA on May 21, Friday in the cafeteria. It really was a beautiful event arranged by the committee headed by Mrs. Azra S., and Mrs. Ingrid B., and Mrs. Shaheena S. Comemorative plaques were presented to the outgoing PTA working committee members by Mr. McGlothlin on behalf of the school. Diedre R.'s students performed a brief musical. It was the icing on the cake!

Many people signed up for the PTA sub-committees. The following is a list of the committees so far: Girls Club (activities for girls only), Telephone Tree, Motivation Committee (a PR committee for the PTA), UN Night committee, Cafeteria committee (seeking ways to improve it and its services), Fundraising committee (responsible for helping the PTA generate funds), Buffalo committee (writing, collecting, and printing the PTA Newsletter, "The Buffalo"), Mustafa Malik Memorial Committee.

The major objectives of the PTA 1998-1999 are as follows: l) Encourage parent and teacher participation in school activities 2) Provide a pool of volunteers to assist both teachers and administration in times of need 3)Increased interaction and better communication among the members of the L. A. Society, to promote awareness and encourage participation in the working of the Society 4)Formulate a written constitution for the L.A.S. PTA.

Future events to be arranged by the PTA include: UN Night, Winter Mela, Basant, Teacher Appreciation Day.
