I figured, I have a goth
page for my gothic side, so it was time to make a hippie page for my hippie
side. I even have the Grateful Dead playing in my CD player as I work on
this, for inspiration. American Beauty. Love that album.
My Hippie
Experience...
Well, let's see, there was the
part where I was born and spent the first four years of my life in the
Monterey, California area in the early seventies...You could say I was
born a "hippie child"...but then after that it was pretty much suburbia
until my "Hippie Summer" of 1992. I don't know exactly how it started,
except that maybe it was the tiedyes. (Or maybe the acid...) I was making
tiedyed sheets in my kitchen one afternoon in late June or early July of
'92, when my brother called and asked if I would take him and some of his
friends up to Cougar Hot Springs and "Hippie Hollow" (a nearby camping
area that didn't cost anything to camp). I decided, sure why not, so I
packed a few items, went and picked them up, and headed up the McKenzie.
We got up there after dark, and it looked as though there was a party going
on at Hippie Hollow. There was a bonfire and a drum circle, lots of tents,
and several hippie buses. I then realized that we were right in between
the Grateful Dead concert (I, of
course, had gone...) and the Oregon Country Fair. Most of the people at
Hippie Hollow that night were Deadheads from out of town/out of state that
had decided to camp until the Country Fair. We pulled in to find a spot
to pitch our tents, and when we stopped the car and got out to unload,
one gentleman approached us and said, "Hey man, you got any beer? I'll
dose ya all for a couple beers, man..." Strangely enough, I had 3 Millers
in my fridge left over from a party that I had thrown in a cooler and put
in the car. I pulled them out and handed them to the gentleman, and he,
true to his word, gave us all a hit or two of acid apiece. We got set up
and the acid kicked in as we were finishing with our tents and stuff. It
was a great trip, sitting in our tents, listening to the drum circle, the
smell of sandalwood incense in the air...The next morning my brother and
his friends walked down to the hot springs and my boyfriend of the time
and I kicked back at camp, digging in the peaceful groove in the air. On
a whim, we walked down to the edge of the river and stripped, and sat in
the water naked, talking, greeting passersby, none of whom seemed disturbed
in the least by our lack of clothing. It was so peaceful and calm....I
spent the rest of the summer in that peaceful space, even after we headed
back home later that day, making tiedyes, enjoying the sunshine, listening
to classic rock and folk, occasionally dropping acid (the last time I did
so that regularly...I quit for good in 1996), and writing the beginnings
of what would become "The
Truth", my spiritual belief system. I felt like I had gotten "back
to my roots", and I felt SO content. I'm not as immersed in hippie culture
anymore, but enjoy visiting that side of myself periodically. I'm glad
I met my inner hippie, and I hope you have enjoyed it too! :)
Hopefully I'll come up with more
stuff to put on here, so be sure to check back! :)
