17. THOMAS ARTHUR7 FLOOK (THOMAS6, JOHN5, JACOB4, JACOB3, JACOB2, FLOOK1) was born 22 Oct, 1880 in St George, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England2, and died 16 Aug, 1955 in Cardiff, Wales. He married SUSAN ANN KENNY 28 Sep, 1901 in Canton, Cardiff3, daughter of WILLIAM KENNY and MARY O'DONNELL.

He was a plumber and general laboure. He converted to Catholicism on 3rd apr 1908 St Mary of the Angel Kings Rd.
Thomas was the second son of publican Thomas FLOOK , young Tom was brought up in his early life in a pub. "The Bull Inn" in Great George Street, Bristol. His mother, -Thomas senior's second wife - died when he was ~ six. At that time he was in Cardiff.
By the time he was seven his father boasted that he could beat anyone at cards. He liked gambling and it was one of the reasons why he never really got on financially.
Thomas has a sister Hester, called Hetty, and a half-brother George who was the son of Thomas's first marriage to Hannah Coggins. George was a lot older than Thomas, being 21years old.(See separate article)
George virtually reared his young brother and sister, since Thomas senior was rather addicted to the drink and died in 1900 in St.David's hospital in Cardiff. Thomas in 1859 had been a sugar refinery labourer, and other than being a victualler I don't know what other occupations he followed or for how long, but at his second marriage in 1874 he was listed as a "dealer". Living in Redcross Street which is in the same area as he had the pub. His father, John was also listed as a "dealer" therefore he probably just followed his father for a while. In 1886 Thomas was recorded as a dealer.
When Thomas Flook married young Tom's mother he was 42 and she 18 !
On the professional side young Tom was apprenticed as a plumber and eventually became a master plumber. His brother George set him up a few times in business but nothing really came of it due to Tom's passion for gambling. He would go off one day to the races and leave the work to employees who didn't work.
Not much is known about his early life except for how he met his wife,Susan. Susan worked at the same place as a man called Frank Whitford. He was a coachman and had a liking for Hetty,Tom's sister. Frank would pass notes to her through Susie and through this she met Tom.
He was a conservative voter throughout his life. And a very fine shot with the rifle. In fact 2 clippings from the newspapers of the day mention him:
1939 VETERAN SHOT RETIRES
Veteran Tom Flook who has announced his intention to retire from active association with Cardiff Gasworks Air Rifle Club,has been the recipient of a presentation to mark the occasion by his many associations in the sport. Mr. J. Burt,chairman of the Gasworks club, in handing over a suitable momento to Mr. Flook who started shooting in 1905, enumerated some of his acheivements during his long career. These are: -

Two possibles (35) were recorded in the closing matches of the season in connection with Cardiff & District Air Rifle League, one by the oldest and one by the youngest. H.Shields a first year shooter for Ninian Park, performedthe feat and the other instance most appropriately was the farewell score of Mr. Thomas Flook known to all older shots as Tommy. Mr. Flook made it known that he has now decided to hang up his gun after 34 years. years of shooting, not only in Cardiff but in London, Bristol and various towns in the valleys. Where his good shooting has gained for him over 50 trophies including a 10 guinea challenge cup for all comers.
His list of records includes top averages for 5 years running with his old team the Wyndhams and an average of over 33 on 4 different occasions. He has been regarded as the best shot in the following clubs --Victoria, Stag& Hounds St Ninians and his last club, Gas Athletics.
Tommy used to ride a motorbide with a side car. Later on he got the registration number DBO 407. He used to carry a prlmus stove and when he went out on picnics would stop on the side of the road and cook.
Notes for SUSAN ANN KENNY:
A plank fell on her from the scaffolding causing her to have a still born child.
The two babies died aged 5hrs and 10hrs.
The family lived in 24 Severn Rd and 4 and 14 Lionel Rd.

Gran joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Parramatta, NSW, Australia on the 26th Nov 1976. She was a faithful member as long as her health permitted. She send me money on my mission, which sometimes saved us from starvation.
Gran was good at knitting and crocheting and made lots of baby clothes and doilies. She especially made pretty pansy doillies. She also crocheted dresses mum and I often wore them back in the 1970s.
Gran virtually lived with us or near us all our lives. She lived behind us when we were in Barrymede drive, with us at North Rd, then again when we came to Australia. Gran and Grandad arrived in 1969.
