Dave's Photos of Scotland-1996 Trip

In March 1996, we went back to Scotland. As it was Spring, and snow still covered the highlands, we decided to go on a historical tour. We rented a car from a Rent a Wreck type rental company, and drove about 1000 miles to various historical sites in central and southern Scotland. We did spend 2 nights in bothies, though, one near Hadrian's Wall in northern England,, and an abandoned one(with sheep manure on the floor) near Pitlochry. Old fishing boats being used as storage sheds on Holy Island. This church near Carlisle doesn't feed their cows very well.

Sheep visiting the 1800 year old Hadrian's Wall. Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island. Sheep near Pitlochry.

We were the first passengers on this small ferry to a castle in the middle of Loch Leven. Carvings at Stirling Castle. A gravestone in the abbey behind Hollyrood Palace.

Roman toilets at Housteads fort on Hadrian's wall. Dave at Smailholm Tower in The Borders. Hollyrood Palace, in Edinburgh.

Castle Blackness, scene of Mel Gibson's Hamlet. Dog owners beware. The grave of the real Rob Roy.

A toilet with a view at St. Andrew's Castle. An unmaintained hut (not a bothy) that we stayed in. We were the first people at the castle in Loch Leven in 1996.

The Holy Island causeway, when the tide is out. When the tide's in, you can't drive there. The not so politically correct (at least in America, anyway) Scottish Council for Spastics, a licensed charity.

Crichton Castle south of Edinburgh. Loch Leven Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned. A Scottish traffic jam.
