Many
times the question is asked” What is your favorite Bible scripture?” And yet
there are so many wonderful words from God to chose from, I would have to say
one of my favorites is the beginning of the psalmist David’s Twenty Third Psalm,
“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Although the verses following this
first line are spoken and used in prayer as a great comforting, that one line
says so much. Oh great king David, what do you mean that we shall not want? He
was telling us that the Lord our God has provided for all our needs. In times of
joy and in times of sorrow. In times of prosperity and in times of despair. In
times of happiness when shared with our loved ones.
And times of mourning when we grieve their loss from us.
As we reflect and memorialize those now departed from us, we draw from an
indelible image of when they impacted a part of our lives that we can cherish.
They take the hand of our Lord and pass thru the door that leads to their
eternal lives as we stand with that door closed to us leaving only the memories
they have left. They leave us with our hearts weary of grief and burdened from
loss. We tire from the pains of our sorrows. But the Lord is our shepherd. We
read Matthew 11:28 Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and
burdened, and I will give you rest.” As He takes those gone from us thru the
valley of death, He makes us lie down in green grass; He leads us beside the
still waters and refreshes our souls. He renews our joy if we let Him. Let us
pray.
“Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your tender mercies. We praise you as You
welcome home our dearly departed. We give thanks to you for our joy in the
precious memories that we hold so dear. May Your love continue to comfort us
when our hearts grieve with feelings of loss. May You Shepard us always, in the
name of your Son Jesus.
Amen”
