What is a passive radiator?

In the simplest terms,

A passive radiator is basically a speaker that doesn't have any electronic parts.
They do not have magnets or voice coils. They are not woofers. They require a woofer in tandem to work properly. 
Although they work just like a powered woofer. When the powered woofer (driver) is moving in a sealed tuned cabinet the Passive radiator or ( Drone) moves due to the air inside the sealed cabinet being moved by the actual woofer, being  powered by the amplifier. Thus acts performs and sound like a real woofer.
