Software is what we enables the computer do various things. Applications and programs are other words for software. Without software a computer is useless. Here are some common types of software:
A word processor enables a computer to work like a very powerful typewriter.
A database is used for information management. A library's catalogue system is an example of a database.
A spreadsheet is used to create budgets and charts, and analyze and recalculate numbers quickly.
Painting and drawing software is used to create graphics, illustrations, charts and other drawings.
And, of course, there are many applications to use on the Internet, such as a browser to surf the web and programs to send email messages.
These applications are all very powerful, but none will work without system software.
