Aldo Montoya
Hometown: Portugal, although they will probably never admit it.
Height: ???
Weight: ???
Finisher: Jumping bulldog off the second rope. [He would face the wrong way first and then spin around to nail it in mid-air to try and avoid it looking weak and stupid... it didn't work]
Career:
Aldo Montoya, the Portuguese Man-O-War! Since we all know what a military powerhouse Portuguese is. Not only that however, but his name has a double meaning, naming him after a tropical fish that bobs around in the water and attacks only when you basically step right on it. Feel the intimidation factor.
Since just about every foreign wrestler in the wrestling world has to wear a mask, the great Man-O-War is no different. Only he brought in Portuguese’s own special take on a mask, in what turned out to look like a jockstrap. It’s not as stupid as it sounds though, since it was a bright yellow jockstrap. At least it went with the rest of his tights, colored bright green and bright red. Collectively creating a blinding eyesore from head to toe.
On a final note in going over the gimmick, lets not forget about the weird sounding theme music he had. It seemed to have sound effects in it that resembled something like baboons mating.
He first debuted on Monday Night RAW, while Ted Dibiase was co-hosting with Vince. Ted was so impressed with Aldo’s performance that he offered him a spot in the Million Dollar Corporation he was forming at the time. Aldo turned him down. Aldo should have been grateful to get an offer to join, considering the other members that made it into that exclusive club, like IRS, Sid, Tatanka, Kama and The Underfaker.
Aldo obviously made a smart career choice though by attempting to get noticed on his own. He does nothing of note until he shows up in the 1995 Royal Rumble, where he is eliminated after making no impact at all.
A few weeks after WrestleMania 11, Aldo wrestled Jeff Jarrett for the IC championship. The end result was a no decision. Jarrett was suppose to hit a german suplex, and you guessed it, the ref counted to three even though both men raised a shoulder at two. At least they were supposed to have raised a shoulder at two. Jarrett went on a rant after the match about how he won and made a point to stand by the video wall during the replay to prove it, and you know what, he was right! Aldo didn’t even raise his shoulder, and Jarrett did. So there was a rematch week and Jarrett won the match to retain/regain the title, depending on who you ask. So instead of the courageous young face getting screwed over in his match with the evil, cheating, heel champion, Aldo ended up looking like and idiot and anyone with half a brain could see Aldo lost fair and square. No other angles were shown of the fall after the video wall disaster, and the next week it was reviewed with the pin shown in a wide shot. Aldo couldn’t even win a match right, so he spent the rest of his WWF career going with his strength, losing.
This electric feud doesn’t end there however, since Aldo seemed to feel he deserved another shot at the title. At the original In Your House, Razor Ramon was wrestling Jeff Jarrett and The Roadie in a handicap match after the 1-2-3 Kid suffered a neck injury. After the match, Razor took a double team beating from Jarrett and the Roadie, and someone had to save him. Someone that could take charge, someone that could clear the ring of the terrible heels, someone that the fans would go nuts over. Finally he came, and we get the debut of SAVIO VEGA! Oh yeah, but first Aldo Montoya tried to make the save but the heels just grabbed him before he got in any real offence, and chucked him out of the ring where he laid on his ass while Savio came to save Ramon.
Once again Aldo sits around and does nothing, except show up in the 1996 Royal Rumble. Keeping his streak alive from the year before, Aldo is eliminated quickly and makes no impact at all. At least he is consistent.
Geez, I am really stretching it between periods here, but I swear, the guy did nothing. No fueds or pay-pre-view appearances, nothing. He didn’t even make it to the Underdogs team at Survivor Series 1995. He couldn’t make the cut of a team captained by Barry Horowitz and had Bob “Sparkplug” Holly as a member.
At the 1996 Survivor Series he did wrestle, on Bart Gunns team, during the Free For All. He was eliminated, hardly anyone noticed and the people that did just wondered where the guy in the clown suit went.
Then we have Aldo’s final WWF appearance. He wrestled Billy Gunn on the first ever Raw is War. It wasn’t much of a send off, but summed up Aldo’s career pretty well. He wrestled Billy Gunn in his nothing stage before RockaBilly, and was pinned while no one noticed since we were talking to Sunny backstage during the end of the match.
