Purpose: This activity will allow students to determine the angle of the Sun, and consider how the Sun's angle may affect solar energy available.
Materials: Each group needs one meter stick, a protractor, chalk and 2 yds. of string.
Procedure: Each group will measure the shadow of the meter stick at the start of the solar collection experiment and at the end. Students should be divided into groups of 2 or 3.
1. Have one student stand the meter stick up on one end.2. Another student must mark where the shadow of the meter stick ends on the ground (with chalk)
3. One student must old one end of the string at the top of the meter stick. Another student must extend the string and place it at the end of the shadow. (Forming a triangle)
4. Use a protractor to measure the angle formed where the shadow and the string meet. This is the angle of the sun.
