PURPOSE

To provide a unique and compelling way to engage students in the study of heat transfer and solar energy as an alternative energy source. To provide practical applications of absorption and conduction as they apply to heat.

OBJECTIVES
1. Students will be able to recognize the relationship between latitude and the amount of solar energy absorbed.

2. Students will be able to calculate the number of calories produced by observing change in water temperature over time.

3. Students will be able to determine if there is any relationship between elevation and the amount of solar energy produced.

4. Students will be able to determine if there is a relationship between the angle to the sun and the amount of solar energy absorbed. (Optional Activity)

5. Students will be able to distinguish the different methods of heat transfer. (convection, conduction, radiation)

6. Students will be able to apply higher order thinking skills (evaluation) to explain the process by which heat transfer has produced a change in water temperature.
