LETTER OF INTRODUCTION

Table of All Participating Schools

Each school will submit one letter of introduction. Use your own discretion on whether or not to combine letters from several classes into one. Please include the name and location of the school, including latitude and longitude, and the grade levels participating. We would also like an email address and postal address. This information will be posted. We encourage teachers and students to correspond with one another. Free email accounts may be set up through Yahoo or E-mail if necessary. Use this letter of introduction to describe your school and community. Any other information that you can share would further enhance the project.

Greetings from Scoil Eoin, Kilbarrack, Dublin5, Ireland.

Kilbarrack is a suburb on the N.E. of the city of Dublin. It is a 15
minute train journey to the city centre, yet we are only a 10 minute walk
from Bull Island  a Nature Reserve where thousands of migratory ducks
and geese over winter.

There are 270 pupils in the school  aged between four and thirteen. We're
in Fourth Class and there are 32 pupils in our class. We have one
computer in our classroom  and one Internet connection in the school.

At 53 degrees 25.59minutes North  we are nearer to the North Pole than
the Equator. However, even at this latitude solar panels are beginning to
appear on the roofs of some houses. Our longitude is 6 degrees 15 minutes
West.

The climate in Ireland is mild, moist and variable.Dublin is on the East
coast so we fortunate in that less then 30 inches of rain falls here
annually.

We are looking forward to participating in this project as it will be
our first occasion  collaborating with schools around the world.
Our e-mail address for the project will be scoileoin@hotmail.com

Hello down there. We are a fifth-sixth "pull out" class in Bakersfield,
California, USA. That means each day, a different group comes to this class for
SCIENCE, Art, Computer Lab, P. E., Language Arts, and other enrichment from
their regular school within our district. We are Owens Magnet School, our GATE
program being the "magnet." Today my usual group is at the coast in Cambria,
California visiting Camp Keep for the week. That is an environmental education
camp which I think is the highlight of the sixth grade year.

Our climate here is dry (4-7 inches of rainfall per year), except for the past
three weeks, when we've had much needed rain. It has snowed in the mountains
adding to our precious snowpack water supply for our reservoirs. We are an
agricultural and petroleum producing area, and our local economy has depended on
those areas economically for years. We have a long growing season. Nighttime
temperatures usually don't fall below the 40's even in the middle of winter, and
many of our annual plants phase into perennials because of that. Sometimes we do
get surprised, however, with a late frost (mid-February, usually). Temperatures
in the summer soar, and it gets hot for a long time, cooling off near the last
of October (Halloween).

We look forward to participating in this project, and I ask you to bear with us;
I am a "rookie" at on-line projects, and many of my students know more about
computing than I. Thank you for letting us join you, and we look forward to a
wonderful learning experience for us all. If we can do anything or provide
anything, please contact me at: stiernj@bcsd.k12.ca.us

Thank you again!

Hello from Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA!

Kenosha is a city in southeastern WI. We have a population of about 85,000. Kenosha is 45 minutes south of
Milwaukee and 1 hour north of Chicago, Illinois.  We are two eighth grade students, Jennifer and Kelsey, and we are
working on this for the District Tech Fair with our teacher Mrs.. Glembocki. Kenosha is at an elevation of 600 feet.
Our latitude is 42 32N, our longitude is 87 48E.  Our average temperature over the course of the year is 46.3 degrees
Fahrenheit.  Our lowest temperature ever is -31 degrees Fahrenheit, the highest temperature ever was 103 degrees
Fahrenheit.  We usually get snow between the months  of late November to early April.  During the summer the
temperature usually reaches 100 maybe a few degrees more or less.  On average our precipitation is about 33.2 inches
per year.

We attend Lance Middle School, grades 6 to 8.  We have approximately 1000 students as of the 1999-2000 school
year.  We are in the Summit House.  A house is a group of the four main school subjects: Math, Science, Social
Studies, and Language Arts. Kelsey takes Computer Applications as an elective and Jennifer is a Spanish 1 student.

This is the first time any of us has done an online project. We are interested in seeing the results, and we'd like to
chat if possible.

In our school there are 411 pupils. Our school caters for children from third to sixth class.
It was opened in 1981. In our school we have a library and a computer room, which has 17
computers in it, 16 IBM and 1 Apple Mac (which we won). We have 15 teachers, 2 secretaries, 1
classroom assitant and two caretakers. We also have a junior school, St. Attracta's J.N.S.,
on the same campus which caters for junior infants to 2nd class. There are 17 teachers in the
school. They have 3 computers, 2 IBM's and 1 BBC and a library. It was built in 1976. It was
opened on the first of July 1978. There are 470 pupils in the school. Every year the junior
school has an Art's Awareness Day in honour of Ms. Lee their first principal who died in
1986, and a Sports Day. In the races the children can win different coloured rosettes, red
for first, blue for second and yellow for third. In the senior school there is also a Sports
Day, and we also have Sports- for-all-day and Book Week. Both schools have a Book Fair each
year. In the Book Fair 50% of the proceeds go to the school so we can buy new books for our

The James Still Learning Center is located in Hindman, KY USA at 37.58 N and
82.71 W.  We are a non-graded K-8 school for children with learning
differences.  We have a total of 32 students, 4 certified teachers and an
aide.  Eleven students (grades 6-8) will be participating in the project.
Mrs. Ann Titsworth is the teacher of this middle grade science class.

The area in which we are located is hilly.  We are on the western edge of
the Appalachian Mountains.  The economy is based mainly on coal production;
both deep mines and strip mines. Winters are relatively cold with several
snows from 3-6 inches deep on the average.  We experience all four seasons
and are now enjoying an early spring.

Greetings from Mill Pond Elementary in Lacey Township!!  We are a 6th grade
Science class working on this project. We are located in central New Jersey
at 47 Latitude and 74 Longitude.  We receive an average of 47 inches of
rainfall each year.  We have 4 distinct seasons:  in the Winter, the
temperature averages 32 degrees, in the spring 50 degrees, summer 73 degrees
(although it gets much hotter: most days are in the 80's or 90's), and our
fall is cool, averaging 45 degrees.

We have no computers linked to the internet in our classrooms yet, but once a
week, we have Internet Research class, where there are 30 computers connected
to the internet.

We have been studying Solar Energy for almost a month now, and this project
that one of the students, Vienne Z., discovered, directly ties into our
studies.  It would be interesting to learn how other parts of the world
experience the Sun as well. We also look forward to communicating via the
Internet with other schools.  Our e mail address for this project is:
