CALCULATING CALORIES

 

 CALORIE: The amount of energy needed to raise one gram of water one degree celcius.

    Once students determine the change in temperature they can do the following calculation to determine the number of calories of solar energy they have collected.

        1 ml of water= 1 gram

Substitute your numbers into the equation:

    change in temperature (ºC) x mass of water (g) x 1cal/gºC = # calories
