Burda 294/31

This doily combines several elements beautifully and effectively:cables, lace knitting, and knitted lace. It is from the English language Burda Lace Knitting Special #294. The center starts with 16 stitches, and as you can see, I cast these on, and got a huge, unsightly hole in the middle. It was after knitting this doily that I decided to tat the centers of my round knitted pieces. Notice the clean centers of the Posy Doily, Rachel Schnelling and Christine Duchrow doilies. I hope to post a detailed explanation of this start with photos soon.

Square Peacock Doily

This novelty appeared on the cover of The Workbasket of November, 1954. I showed a non-knitting friend this Workbasket, and seeing the picture on the cover of a November issue, he naturally thought this was a turkey doily. There are a few glitches with this pattern, and I really think the "frame" needs to be reworked. The square quality is not as well defined as it might be, and the solid knitted areas with eyelets are outlined with k2tog on both sides. If I were to do it again(and I won't), I would use SKP on the right sides of these solid areas for better definition. Medrith Glover published a round version of this pattern in Knitter's Magazine in spring 1992. While I haven't knitted her's, it's probably better.
