Beautiful Memories

Outside the J. Edgar Hoover Building
Washington D.C.
7-18-98
7:24 A.M.
The echoes of the sirens burned in Mulder's ears and tears burned in his
eyes. He was at home when he received the call but he only wished he
could have been there, with her, when it happened. But it was all over
now and there was nothing he could do about it.
"FBI! FBI! Move out of my way!" Mulder screamed shoving people out of
his way as he made his way through the now growing crowds. There had
been a 10 car pile up and according to Skinner, Scully had been a part
of it.
Mulder had kept his hopes up but once he saw Scully's car his heart just
sunk. He couldn't hold it anymore but he was doing his best not to just
break down right there. A police man walked up to Mulder,
"A man over there told me that Dana Scully is your partner, am I right?"
The officer asked Mulder pointing to the sidewalk but there was no one
there.
"Yes, yes that's right," Mulder croaked out.
"Come with me please. My name is Officer Thomas," The officer walked
over to one of the 12 ambulances lined up at the side of the sidewalk.
"Oh, God!" Mulder cried out as soon as he saw the woman with short red
hair lying on a stretcher, although her face was unrecognizable under
the blood and bandages. Suddenly the paramedics put the body bag around
her.
"I'm so sorry about your loss," The officer said putting his hand on
Mulder's shoulder. He then made his way over to the next ambulance.
"Mulder," A voice said behind Mulder making him spin around.
"Skinner," Mulder replied looking at the ground.
"Come in my office please," Skinner said putting his arm around his
shoulder blades and walking inside the J. Edgar Hoover Building. Once
he had gotten seated in one of Skinner's chairs, he couldn't take it
anymore, the tears just started flowing.
"That really was Scully wasn't it?" Mulder asked.
"Well it wasn't any government conspiracy covering up the existence of
extraterrestrials, Mulder. Yes it was her, and don't think you're going
to be the only one missing her," Skinner said putting his hand on his
forehead. He then pulled out a container of pills and took two. They
weren't any pills that Mulder had ever seen before.
"Look, I can't take anymore. I'm going home and I'm taking the week
off," Mulder said getting up. He had to hold onto the chair for
balance.
The ride home was horrendous. Mulder tried as much as possible to keep
his mind off Scully, but the fire trucks, ambulances, police cars,
lights, sirens and the hundreds of people crowded around to get a look
of the accident weren't much of a reassurance. It scared him to think
that all of those people were looking square into the eyes of death.
Death of his partner and death of his whole life. All of his mixed
emotions scared him and confused him.
Mulder's Apartment
9:03 A.M.
As soon as he stepped into his apartment he laid down on his couch and
stayed there for the rest of the day. He fell in and out of restless
sleep, crying and remembering beautiful memories of Scully. Remembering
her flowing red hair, her short slender frame and her bright controlling
blue eyes. He remembered her smile down on him when he would awake in a
hospital, her shrewd remarks on funny or weird cases they did. He
remembered how she cared for him and would comfort him by holding his
hand and holding him close. But mostly, he remembered that he loved her
and never got to tell her. He loved her? Suddenly he sat up on his
couch.
"Oh, God, I loved Scully!" Mulder cried out to himself. He slapped
himself for not realizing sooner and fell back down crying. He had
never spent so much time thinking about her before or anyone for that
matter.
He awoke the next morning soaked in his sweat. He saw something under
his door and got up to see what it was and fell to the floor under his
weakened legs. He tried again and this time succeeded in his attempt.
There was a piece of paper that read SHES NOT DEAD in bold capital
letters. Then in smaller letters at the bottom it said "meet me at the
corner of 5th street and Gordon Ave."
He quickly got dressed and got in his car and drove to the area the
paper read. He was ready to do anything to bring his beloved Scully
back. The corner of 5th and Gordon was an old alley. He got out of his
car and started walking down it.

8:35 A.M.
"Welcome. Sleep well?" The Cigarette Smoking Man appeared through the
mist.
"What did you do to Scully?" Mulder screamed.
"Scully is in no danger as of now. As you well know that was not Scully
in the ambulance but that was her car," CSM said slowly.
"Is Skinner in on this?" Mulder demanded.
"We negotiated an agreement of a sort," CSM said between puffs of
smoke.
"What do you want from her?" Mulder asked through clenched teeth.
"They want to kill her but make it look like an accident," CSM replied.
"Who is they? Mulder asked stepping closer to CSM.
"I am not under authority to answer that," CSM said stepping back.
"Oh, yeah and like you're under any authority to say any of the
information you've been telling me!" Mulder cried out.
"I'm here to help you Mr. Mulder," CSM replied.
"They want to kill Scully," CSM started.
"Then why didn't they have her get in the accident that happened
yesterday?" Mulder interrupted.
"Because they couldn't get what they want that way. They want to take
all of her memories. They think that she has seen and experienced too
much and they don't trust her with what she knows. It's a long term
process that involves many people and the technology is amazing. They
think they have all the time in the world but now that I've told you
they shouldn't be able to continue there little experiment," CSM
explained.
"Where can I find her?" Mulder asked softly.
"You'll have to go to England. The Compton Wynyates in Warwickshire is
where she is. She's being kept hostage in the basement. No one is
allowed in that old building which makes it perfect for them to hold her
there. You have 48 hours before they start the experiments. I got a
copy of my key made for you," CSM handed Mulder a package with the key
and an address of that place.
"Wait a minute. I need to know something. Why are you helping me?"
Mulder asked.
"I'm on your side, Mr. Mulder," CSM replied and walked away.
Washington International Airport
Washington D.C.

6:38 P.M.
Mulder sat at the airport praying that they didn't hurt Scully. He was
wondering if she knew what was going to happen to her. He also wondered
if she had the same feelings for him that he had for her. He heard his
flight being called and he got up from his seat, grabbed his bags and
started walking down the terminal. He sat down in his window seat and
got a good look at the pavement because it would be a nice 8 hours over
water. He fell asleep on the plane knowing he wouldn't be getting much
sleep when he was there.
He awoke after about 6 hours on his flight and he turned to look at the
person sitting next to him. She was a red head and he thought she
looked exactly like Scully. He shut his eyes hard and opened them
again. He looked at this women again and realized she looked nothing
like Scully, in fact she didn't even have red hair.
"Oh, great now everyone looks like Scully," Mulder thought to himself.
He decided to stay awake for the rest of his flight and go over in his
head what he would do.
The first thing he did when he got off the plane was check out a hotel
room in the area of Warwickshire.

Mulder unpacked his belongings and got out the package CSM had given
him. He took out the key and took a good look at it. The thing must
have been 5 inches long. He took out his map and tried to go through it
in his head before stepping outside again. He dressed all in black. He
had black sneakers, black socks, black pants, a black shirt and a black
coat with a hood. He made sure he had his gun and CSM's package and set
off into the early morning darkness.
He drove most of the way except he parked at a gass station about 1/4 of
a mile away from the building. He got out of his car and walked the
rest of the way. He stopped in front of the building and stood in awe
at how large it was. He could only imagine how big the basement must
be. He walked around the back and found the door to the basement. He
put the key in the handle and let himself inside.
The Compton Wynyates basement

4:58 A.M.
It was pitch black except Mulder could see a faint flicker of light off
into the distance. He started to walk down the long hallway and as he
got closer he realized it was a candle. He took it so he could see the
directions he held in his hand. He did bring a flashlight but he felt
he didn't need it right then so he wouldn't waste the batteries. It
said that he was standing in a corridor and he should take a right. He
heard someone coming in his direction so he blew out the candle and sat
on the ground.
The guy walked right on past Mulder but stopped at the end of that
hallway.
"Probably looking for his candle," Mulder thought to himself.
The maze of twists and turns were confusing but easy to get through.
There weren't any guards because according to CSM no one even knew about
this place.
He got to the door that Scully was supposed to be in. He tried that
handle but it was locked.
"Great, CSM didn't say anything about this one," Mulder thought but
then had an idea.
He got out the key he had and tried the lock with it. He heard the
click but the door didn't open. He tried pushing it and it moved a
little. He put his whole body against it and pushed and pushed until it
slid open enough to fit his body through. That room was also completely
dark like the rest of the building. He took out his flashlight and
turned it on. It was filled with un-lit candles and Mulder thought the
room looked like some sort of Medieval worshiping room. Then he saw the
machine that would have taken everything from Scully. It would have
taken her memories as well as her life. He saw something moving out of
the corner of his eye.
Sk. She had a gag in her mouth and her hands and feet were tied up.
She was trembling uncontrollably. Mulder reached behind Scully's neck
to untie the mask. He noticed cuts and bruises on her face as if
someone had punched her when she struggled. Suddenly Scully started to
whimper out of fear of this person she couldn't see coming near her.
When Mulder got off the mask she started to scream because of the bright
light shining from the flash-light.
"Shhhhh Scully it's me, Mulder," Mulder whispered reassuringly to her
softly stroking her face. He quickly cut the gag off and cut the rope
wrapped around her wrists and ankles. She practically flew into his
arms and started crying happy tears.
"Oh, Mulder! They were going to kill me!" Scully cried as quietly as
she could to him.
"I thought you were dead. They faked this car accident and..." Mulder
started.
"I know, they told me everything. But they were the only ones who knew
I wasn't dead. How did you know to come after me?" Scully asked
turning to sit in his lap.
"Scully I just knew. I didn't know at first though. This isn't
something I would want anyone to know but I'm going to tell you.
Scully, that first night, I spent every hour of it crying and thinking
of you. They were beautiful memories because I realized something that
I would have thought a person was crazy if someone else told me. But
that's not the case Scully, I really love you," Mulder carefully told
her, kissing her forehead just as she had done to him in his hallway
after Skinner told her she was transferred to Salt Lake City Utah. The
only thing that stopped them from going the one step further was a
single bee sting on Scully's finger. This time Mulder was positive that
it wouldn't happen again.
Mulder moved in closer to Scully. His lips brushed Scully's cheek, then
her chin. When she didn't show any signs of hesitation, Mulder moved in
for his intended target as his lips moved delicately and lovingly
against hers. He pulled her tighter and closer to him and if it was up
to him, he would never let go. After a couple of minutes Scully pulled
back and rested her head on Mulder's shoulder.
"Mulder, as you can well see I have had time to think about that same
subject. In the same way, I never thought I would see you again and you
never thought you would see me. I really don't know what else to say
except I do share the same feelings for you. In, in other words, I love
you too," Scully said in between choked tears.
"Scully, we have to get out of here before someone gets smart," Mulder
whispered, standing up with Scully in his arms. She wasn't strong
enough to walk herself.
Mulder shut off his flashlight and walked slowly out of total darkness.
He walked through the maze with no troubles until he got to the hallway
with the guard that had walked by before.
"He's found himself another candle," Mulder whispered to Scully.
"Is that good or bad?" Scully asked.
"We'll find out in a minute," Mulder replied taking out his gun.
"Scully, you're going to have to ride on my back. If I have to fight
this guy, I'll need both of my arms," Mulder said putting Scully down.
She walked around to his back and sat on his shoulder blades as Mulder
crouched down. He thanked God this building had high ceilings.
"I think you lost something," Mulder said, walking by the guard. He
threw the candlestick at him and hit his square in the forehead.
As soon as he got up from the ground he started racing after the already
running Mulder. When Mulder got to the door outside he waited for the
guard to come and he slammed the door in his face.
"Mulder, where did you park?" Scully asked looking around as the sun
started coming up, promising a new day.
"About a quarter of a mile back," Mulder explained as a group of about
ten guys dressed all in navy blue ran from the building. They all had
guns pointed at them.
"Give us Scully and we'll spare you your life," A big man walked
forward. Scully jumped down off Mulder and hid behind his back.
"I would rather kill myself then give Scully to you," Mulder growled at
the man.
"All right then, take them both," The man announced to his team of men.
Scully realized she could walk okay and stepped back.
Mulder pointed his gun at the three men who came forward. As they went
to grab there guns that they had just secured away, Mulder shot them
all. The other seven men ran up to him and Mulder shot three of them
and two others went after Mulder and the other two tried to get Scully.
Scully kicked one guy in the mouth and he fell backwards on the other
man. Mulder's gun flew to the ground and Scully dove to the ground to
get it before one of the other guys got it. She shot the two that were
fighting with Mulder and shot the other two whom had gone after her.
Mulder got off the ground and took her hand as they ran to his rental
car.
"I don't believe it! That scene we did back there was like something
out of a movie!" Mulder exclaimed as they got into the car at the gas
station.
"I suppose you're superman and you just saved me," Scully sighed.
"I could really use some sleep on a bed rather then some cement floor
curled up in the same position for 3 nights," Scully said. Mulder took
her hand in his.
"I'm so sorry I couldn't have been there sooner," Mulder said looking
deep in her eyes.
"I didn't even think you would ever be there. I still don't know how
you knew to go to England. But don't tell me now, I don't want to know.
All that matters to me is that you are here and we're both alive,"
Scully replied smiling.

They pulled up at there hotel and climbed out of the car. Mulder walked
to the other side and put his arm around Scully as they walked in. They
spent that day sleeping soudless in each other's arms. Neither of them
awoke to any sound.
It was about 4:00 in the afternoon when Mulder awoke to Scully crying.
He shook her gently to wake her up.
"Scully," Mulder said making her jump. She was breathing in and out
rapidly.
"You were having a bad dream," Mulder kissed her on the forehead.
"Thank you. I thought they were taking my memories," Scully hugged him
as she started to cry.
"I'll never let anyone hurt you because I love you. Anyone comes near
you and I'll kick there ass," Mulder said making her smile.
"I think I'm ready to go home soon," Scully said sitting up.
"Why don't we go shopping because of now you're stuck wearing my
clothes.
"Mulder I'll just wear a pair of your shorts and a shirt you have, I
really don't care as of this moment. I just want to get over to that
airport and get the quickest ticket back to Washington," Scully
demanded.
"I don't blame you for a second," Mulder replied.

"Scully, you told me not to tell you about anything that happened but I
just have to warn you about something," Mulder started.
"What is it Mulder?" Scully asked.
"Skinner was in on what happened to you," Mulder said carefully. The
last thing he wanted to do was scare her.
"Oh, God!" Scully cried. She moved closer to Mulder, wrapped her arms
around him as if he could take all of her deepest fears away.
"It's just me and you now Scully. Trust no one. Trust no one," Mulder
warned her.
"I have a plan, Mulder. When you go in to talk to Skinner....." Scully
told him her plan and prepared him for the next day. The flight back to
Washington was much quicker than the flight in even though it took the
same time. Scully was asleep in his arms instead of some far off
land....

Mulder got the secretary to bring him into Skinner's office. He made
himself look like he had just been crying and like he was really tired.
Scully's plan was a good idea and he wanted this to work.
"Mulder, it hasn't been a week yet and you look horrible! I was trying
to get in touch with you the last couple days, where were you?" Skinner
asked looking up from his desk as Mulder walked into the room.
"I had to leave for awhile, everything around here reminds me of Scully.
But I've decided I'm going to have to go on with my life. I can't live
in a deep hole and never come out. What have you heard since I've been
gone. Did you contact her family?" Mulder asked.
"Yes we did because we left the funeral arrangements up to them. The
funeral is tomorrow actually, I'm glad you came back. It will be a
closed casket, of course," Skinner explained.
"What, well what exactly caused Scully to die?" Mulder asked slowly
pretending to choke back tears.
"The force of the impact sent her flying through her windshield and she
actually tore out of her seat-belt. She broke her neck," Skinner said,
also pretending to be extremely upset about the situation.
"Thank you sir. If you don't mind I'm going to start work
tomorrow," Mulder stated leaving.
"No not at all Mulder. Whatever you think is best for you," Skinner
replied. As soon as Mulder left, Skinner got on the phone.
"I thought you told me Mulder knew!" Skinner yelled into the phone.
"He does," A voice answered back.
"Well, he just came crying into my office asking about the funeral
arrangements," Skinner hissed.
"He knows. I'm here to help you Mr. Skinner, don't take advantage of
that," The voice finished.
"What?" Skinner yelled, but there was no one on the other line.
"Damn!" Skinner slammed the phone down.
FBI parking garage
7:30 A.M.
"What did you find out?" Scully asked sitting up from the floor of the
back-seat in Mulder's car.
"Well, your funerals tomorrow and it's going to be a closed casket.
Your mother made the arrangements," Mulder said turning around to look
at her as he pulled out.
"Oh, shoot! I forgot about mom. Why don't we go over there now and
tell her I'm not dead. She's probably a nervous wreck," Scully said
climbing over to sit in the passenger seat.
"You just said that like it's not the first time you've had to tell
someone that you truly are among the living," Mulder said jokingly.
"Mulder what is that? It looks like some huge dog or something on the
side of the road up ahead," Scully exclaimed.
"I don't know," Mulder said confused.
"Oh, shit Mulder, watch out!" Scully screamed but her scream was
muffled out by the sound of metal against wood and metal scraping
against metal. Mulder swerved to miss the deer that galloped by and hit
a tree on the other side of the road and an on coming car from the other
direction slammed right into Scully's side of the car. Off in the
distance you could see a man dressed in navy blue running away.
10 minutes later....
Mulder subconsciously made out a paramedic dragging Scully out of his
car and onto a stretcher. He also made out a paramedic yelling out,
"Hurry up, she doesn't have much time left!"
Suddenly he felt himself being pulled out and the guy said he had
chronic bleeding.
"What the hell!? I just pulled Agent Scully out of a car last week and
she was dead!" Mulder heard coming from the voice of Officer Thomas. A
family of 4 all perished in the other car involved in the crash; Jacob
Forest, 38, Amelia Forest, 34, Emily Forest, 3, and Tyler Forest, 6.
Mulder and Scully were quickly rushed to the hospital. The FBI was
notified at the scene of the accident.

"What! Scully was involved in a crash when she's dead!" Skinner tried
as much as possible to act shocked but he was doing a very crappy job of
it.
"I don't believe this! What kind of a dirty joke are you pulling?"
Skinner yelled slamming down the phone.
Skinner grabbed his car keys and ran out of his office. He was ready to
confront Mulder with what he knew.
Washington Hospital
Washington D.C.
9:00 A.M.
Skinner was disappointed with the fact that talking to Mulder wouldn't
be an easy task. Mulder was unconscious and he had internal bleeding.
He wouldn't have any luck talking to Scully either because she also had
chronic internal bleeding and she had got a piece of glass shoved up
into her forehead. They were both in emergency surgery.
Skinner sat down in the waiting room just as his cellular phone started
to ring.
"Yes," Skinner growled into the phone.
"It worked beautifully, didn't it?" A voice said.
"Exactly what did you do?" Skinner asked.
"One of our men caught a deer and set it free just as they were driving
down the street. None of us thought it would work but it was perfect,"
The voice marveled.
"Yeah perfect and it killed a young family of 4 too!" Skinner yelled.
"That wasn't part of our plan but that's just how things work around
here sometimes. We can't help it," The voice argued.
"Yeah well you take your men and blue and get them out of here. They've
done enough damage so consider our deal off!" Skinner said hanging up
his phone. The secretary sitting behind the hospital counter was giving
him a scared look. He got up and walked out of the hospital.
It took just over a month but finally Mulder was capable of getting out
of his hospital bed to walk around...
Washington Hospital
8-25-98
11:21 A.M.
Mulder made his way out of his hospital room on one of his daily trips
to Scully's bedside. He was 6 feet from Scully's door when suddenly
Skinner came out of it.
"And what do you think you're doing here?" Mulder yelled at Skinner.
"I took care of everything Mulder, it's over. Trust me now," Skinner
said trying to push his way past Mulder.
"I don't think so Skinner. It's going to have to take much more than
that to get my trust back. And don't think you will ever get Scully's
trust back. You were going to get her killed, and for what? I never
understood that! What can possibly be better than the life of the one
person that I love. I wouldn't give her up for the world! You expect
me to believe that it's over!? Prove it to me," Mulder growled at
Skinner.
"You want me to prove it to you?" Skinner asked crossing his arms in
front of Mulder.
"That is what I asked," Mulder replied.
"Okay then. If you ever see another one of those guys in blue trying to
harass you or Scully, I will give both you and Scully a $5000 a month
raise," Skinner said smiling.
"How's that for proof?" Skinner asked.
"All right, lets shake on that one and I'd like to see it in writing,"
Mulder replied shaking Skinner's hand.
"I'll put it on your desk," Skinner said walking away.
Mulder made his way into Scully's room. He sat there for 45 minutes and
almost fell asleep but something moved under him. He realized that he
had settled his head on Scully's arm and her arm had slid out from under
his head.
"Mulder," Scully whispered to him
"Scully, oh I was getting so worried," Mulder said getting up to kiss
her cheek but she moved her head so he kissed her promptly on her mouth.
He was surprised and he jumped back.
"It's okay, come back," Scully anticipated.
"I've missed you," Mulder whispered before returning to her lips.
There they shared the most voluptuous kiss either of them had ever
experienced.
"When will it ever end, Mulder?" Scully asked breaking their kiss. She
looked up at him with eyes full of hatred. Hated for the people who
would have stole everything from her.
"It has ended, Scully," Mulder replied smiling down at her.
"You're saying it's over?" Scully asked sitting up in her bed.
"It's definitely over," Mulder reassured her.
"All that's left is beautiful memories," Mulder said bending down to
hold the person that was his beautiful memory.
