Whispers. Stares. Turned heads. This is what Mulder and Scully got at almost EVERY annual F.B.I. Party. Plus, there were always the rumors about them being more than just "friends". Everybody had heard them and now some people were starting to believe them- since Scully's daughter, Emily, had died, they had been closer than ever, and it showed. If either needed to shed a tear, it was OK to shed it on the other's shoulder. If one needed reassurance or comfort they'd get it. And now, since it was starting to show the whole FBI was making a joke out of it. Their big thing was old song-

"Mulder and Scully sittin' in a tree.
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
First comes love, then comes marriage then comes the baby in the baby carriage."

and so on. But the 1999 F.B.I. party was one that would stick in Scully's head forever. It had all started that day when Mulder came to work.....

"Mulder wanna go to the F.B.I. party tonight?" Scully burst out with as soon as he came in.

"What???" Mulder replied.

"I SAID, 'Do you want to go to the F.B.I. party tonight?'"

"Why, Scully, when did you become so interested in the annual cheapskate party where nobody even looks at us people from the old basement?" Mulder said with that litle smile of his when he cracks a joke.

"Very funny", Scully said. "Actually, I really don't know. I just want to."

"Whatever", Mulder said. "I'll pick you up at 7:30."

"Ok!" Scully said with glee.

Later that night at Scully's apartment

"Ladadada", Scully sang softly as she looked in the mirror and put in a diamond earring.

Suddenly she heard a knock at her door and heard it open.

"Mulder?" she half yelled half said from the bathroom.

"Are you ready?" he said in response.

"Almost", she said as she came twirling out of the bathroom in a long silk, fitted black dress (that was again too long for her petite figure) and black gloves that went abover her elbows. "How do I look?", she asked him.

"Absolutely beautiful, Scully, now we need to go."

"Hold on just a minute!", she said. "It's definitely not a good thing to rush me when I'm getting beautiful."

She half ran back to the bathroom and reapplied a little more lipstick. She tossed the stick into her satin black handbag, turned the light off and came out of the bathroom.

"OK, ready."

"OK, off we go" he said as he handed out his arm for her to take.

She took it and they walked out to their Taurus.

They got stopped at every red light until they came to one where Mulder didn't see anyone so he just sped through it.

"We could have gotten killed there", Scully said.

"Yeah, but we didn't, did we now?" he replied sarcastically.

They rode the rest of the way in silence.

When they got there Mulder had to park in the back because there were no other parking spaces.

"Great", he said. "Look what that extra bit of lipstick has done to us now?"

Scully just rolled her eyes.

They walked arm in arm into the familiar building. As soon as they came into the party room everybody started chanting that age-old song....

"Mulder and Scully sittin' in a tree..."

This time, Scully and Mulder rolled their eyes.
The whole room stopped and went back to dancing after the first time around.

The party passed by rather slowly for Mulder and Scully. They only danced once and the rest of the time they were eating or drinking punch
or talking. Finally, at the last song (a slow song), Mulder stood up, held his hand out to Scully and said....
"May I have this dance?"
"What??" she replied.
"May I have this DANCE?" he said.
"Surely" she said in response.

At the end of the song Mulder and Scully leaned in for a soft, friendly kiss. As soon as they came up for air Scully said...

"Mulder and Scully sittin' in a tree....."

Epilogue:
Something happened between Mulder and Scully that night. Only about two months later they got married. Scully soon after found out she was pregnant and 8 months later little Michelle was born. Both still worked on the X-Files but definitely not as much with the baby around.
