It is red in colour because its 'soil' contians lost of iron. This has then oxidised, or rusted, causing the red appearence.
To the naked eye, it does look a reish colour and when seen through binoculars or a telescope, you can definatly see that it is red.
During certain times of the year, Mars' polar ice caps are visible. Against the red of its 'soil' and the white of the polar caps, it is a lovely sire to see!
In the northern hemisphere, it is usually visible during the summer months.
