Taking Pieces of Me

Just when I am starting to believe
That there is more in life for me,
I look around and I perceive
People still taking pieces of me --
A little piece here, a little piece there
And they don't even seem to care.
Chip, chip, chipping away
Until there's nothing left.

Why is it no one can ever own
Their own behaviour, all alone?
Don't pass your secret agenda on to me.
I'm wiser now and I can see,
The hidden lies behind your smiling way --
Never saying what you mean or meaning what you say.
I listen so carefully but watch what you do.
Your words don't match your actions. Which one is true?

Do you think I'm deaf, that I cannot hear?
Do you think I'm blind, that I cannot see?
Everywhere I turn all is not as it seems
For someone is trying to take another piece of me --
A little piece here, a little piece there
And they don't even seem to care.
Chip, chip, chipping away
Until there's nothing left.

You take my hand and call me friend
But these kind of games, they never end.
Why is it now that I can feel,
That nothing you say is ever real?
Words, words, that's all you ever say.
Promise anything as long as you get your way.
Talk is cheap and your promises cheaper;
Actions speak louder and reality reaches deeper.

You try to change me into what you wish to see.
You play on my needs; manipulate my vulnerability.
You attempt to convince me to want what you really need.
See, another person trying to take another piece of me --
A little piece here, a little piece there
And they don't even seem to care.
Chip, chip, chipping away
Until there's nothing left.

I see your deceit, I hear your lies.
How dare you talk to me of compromise!
Don't blame me for the mistakes you make,
Or for things from me, you try to take.
This time I'm not going to play by your set rules
. I won't build my life using your own tools.
I won't become what you need me to be.
This time, my friend, it's just for me.

The price of acceptance has become to high to pay.
I no longer can participate in the games you play.
Take a good, long look -- get a grasp on reality
Because this time no one's going to take another piece of me - A little piece here, a little piece there
And they don't even seem to care.
Chip, chip, chipping away
Until there's nothing left.
