I dreamed this poem
one night, and got up in the wee hours of the morning to write it down. Shortly
before I wrote this, my child's school had received a threat that there would be
a shooting at the school. It was very frightening, and made me wonder where we
were headed as a society. What Will Be? Once I stood on the
edge of a cliff, And looked out over
the sea, With the past behind
me, and the future before me, And I wondered what
would be. The lessons we should
have learned long ago, In the violent
struggle of our birth, Lay forgotten in our
pursuit of happiness, Discarded alongside
Mother Earth. Fast cars, fast food,
fast money, We've become a planet
of greed. Instead of giving back
to the Earth what we take, And taking only what
we need. Violence, pollution,
poverty, and hunger, Guns on the streets,
and guns in school. Our little children
learn to duck and cover Before they learn the
Golden Rule. Locked in our own
private worlds, We turn a blind eye to
the destruction we see. Each of us rationalizing
our own indifference. "It doesn't
matter if it doesn't affect ME." How long can such a
people exist, Who refuse to learn
from the past? Who pollute their
waters, their lands, and their minds, How long can such a
race last? Once I stood on the
edge of existence, And sadly looked out
over the sea. With darkness behind
me, and darkness before me, And I wondered what
would be. Laura S. Anderson ~Layla~
