What’s in a name? How did game freak come up with these names for pokemon. First pokemon is short for POcKEt MONsters. Well I have decoded some of the names finding out some of the meanings and words related that are in their name. I put this up because one day in school I was thinking of ekans. I wrote his name backwards then I seen it spelled snake backwards. I also seen that in hitmonlee and hitmonchan it has the last names of some of the greatest fighters. So I decided to do it. I wasn’t gonna do it but I thought that it was interesting and some people like you would want to know how some pokemon names came to be. I will try to decode all 150 pokemon names. Here are the ones I have decoded.

Bulbasaur- the bulb on its back

Ivysaur-its plant is like poison ivy

Venusaur-it has many vines

Charmander- like salamander

Charmeleon- like chameleon

Charizard- like lizard

Squirtle- Turtle that squirts water

Wartortle- Turtle for war

Blastoise- like tortoise which blast

Caterpie- like caterpillar

Butterfree- like butterfly free to roam

Kakuna- it is a cocoon

Beedrill- a bee sharp as a needle Pidgey- like pigeon

Ratatta- a rat

Raticate- a rat that eradicates

Spearow- like sparrow

Ekans- snake backwards

Arbok- Cobra backwards with k not c

Clefairy- a fairy tale

Clefable- a fable which is a story like a tale

It has nine tails

Zubat- a bat from the zoo Paras- a parasite

Parasect- a parasite insect

Venonat- a Nat with poisonous venom

Venemoth- a moth with poisonous venom

Meowth- like what a cat says meow, cat with a big mouth

Persian- the cat is from persia?

Psyduck- a psychic duck

mankey- like monkey

Primeape- prime ape

Poliwag- the first stage like tadpole

Abra-Magic word

Kadabra- Magic word

Alakazam- a magic word

Machop- like karate chop

Machoke- like choke

Machamp- he’s the champ

Tentacool- animal with tentacles that’s cool

Tentacruel- animal with tentacles that’s cruel

Geodude- like geode which is rock with a cavity lined with crystals or other material matter

Graveler- like gravel which is pebbles and pieces of rock

Golem- ‘nuff said

Ponyta- like pony

Rapidash- dashes rapidly

Slowpoke- is a slowpoke

Doduo- two dodos

Dodrio- three dodos

Seel- like seal

Grimer- like grime

Shellder- is a shell

Cloyster- an oyster that clamps

Gastly- of gas

Haunter- haunts

Drowzee- like drowzy. Makes you drowzee

Hypno- like hypnosis

Krabby- a crab

Voltorb- in the shape of an orb that has many volts

Cubone- has bone armor and weapon

Hitmonlee- like Bruce Lee

Hitmonchan- like Jackie Chan

Lickitung- licks with its tongue

Koffing- it coughs

Weezing- it wheezes

Rhyhorn- has lots of horns

Tangela- vines that are tangled

Kangaskhan- like the great Genghis Khan

Horsea- a seahorse

Seadra- a sea dragon

Seaking- king of the sea

Staryu- star for you

Starmie- star for me

Mr. Mime- ‘nuff said

Omanyte- like ammonite

Omastar- like Amstar

Aerodactyl- aero meaning flight, the name of a dinosaur

Snorlax- snores and relaxes

Articuno- cold like the arctic and number one

Zapdos- zaps you and number two

Moltres- hot molten lava and number three

Dratini- a tiny dragon

Dragonair- air dragon

Dragonite- dragon that comes out in the night
