Dear friend,

I need to point out that I am not sure what time zone you are in, so I will put all the following into Eastern Time Zone (United States).

#SLAA Online Group (Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous) meets every day at Noon ET and 10pm ET; at 4:30pm ET every weekday; and on Sunday at 9pm Australian ET (which is 5am U.S. EST or 7am U.S. EDT). There are also *WOMEN IN SLAA RECOVERY* meetings at 8pm ET Tuesdays and 9pm ET Saturdays in #SLAA2. There is also an *SLAA ANOREXIA MEETING* at 10pm ET on Fridays in #SLAA2. We conduct business meetings on the 15th of every month in #SLAA2 at 10pm ET (concurrent with the regular meeting in #SLAA).

#SCA Online (Sexual Compulsives Anonymous) meets every night at 9pm ET; and also meets at Mon 3pm / Tue 6:30am / Wed 11pm / Fri 3pm / Sun 7pm. #SCA also meets using paltalk(.com) for voice meetings Tue, Thu, & Sun 7:30pm. SCA also has 3 recovery message boards where people can share by posting messages or reading at any time. They have a "Topic Meeting" board, a "Feedback Meeting" board, and a "Recovery Byte Cafe" board where people post more informally. The site is at www.sca-recovery.org and click Online Meetings. A username and password is required to enter this site; the instructions for obtaining this are quite clear.

#SAA Online (Sex Addicts Anonymous) meets on Sun and Mon at 9pm ET, and Wed at 11:30pm ET.

All three rooms are always open, so you can often find other recovery friends chatting informally there between meetings (just be aware that CStar and SCAbot are computer "bots" and not real people, so they won't chat with you - meaning the room is empty if they are the only nicknames present). Later in this letter, we also point out 5 (of many more) sexual recovery email groups that you might be interested in joining.

---- Following is our standard open letter for inquiries ----

Dear newcomer and/or longtimer,

Below please find directions to #slaa, a channel on the porn-free servers of the StarLink-IRC group. I hope we get to "see you" soon at #slaa online. Let me know if you have any difficulties. If these instructions and our website do not provide the answers you need, simply write our support staff at slaaonline@yahoo.com with your more specific questions for a speedy personal reply. Just as your initial request was responded to from this email address, it is checked regularly by one of several trusted servants and we are glad to provide any specific help should you need it.

Information at www.angelfire.com/on/slaa explains our group and provides much additional information. Our group has existed for over six years, and we currently have 23 meetings each week. Our meetings include step meetings, feedback meetings, gratitude meetings, and open sharing meetings. Occasionally we also have a tradition meeting, a member's first step share or a speaker meeting in place of our regularly scheduled meeting topic.

If your web browser supports java (most do automatically), there is a link for you to join our room directly from this website. [AOL users: connect, but then use IE-Explorer or Netscape Navigator -- not the AOL browser.] Most of our members use mIRC (shareware), but the java link works quickly and easily; it simply doesn't support colors and some other capabilities that our members have often come to enjoy. Much of this letter explains installing and using mIRC in greater detail.

If you are new to this kind of recovery, there are many digests that you might consider joining. Some are:

---- A SHORT HISTORY ----

#SLAA-online was founded January 30, 1996 when a recovering addict saw the need for a "safe" chatroom. At that time he frequented the sexual addiction newsgroups and began posting a notice frequently of a chatroom meeting, giving the address and time, and offering to provide users with complete information on how they could obtain the needed software and setup information. There was a good steady response, and people began showing up for the weekly meeting. In time, he began to recruit leaders and had about 10 leaders who operated the room. December 17, 1997 he migrated to StarLink-IRC for the chat meetings. He then began expanding the schedule one night at a time until there were meetings every night. There has always been a good steady response to the meetings, and many new and lasting relationships have been formed there. The meetings have been very beneficial to those who take part. In early 1999, the room was formally organized into yearly-elected officers who have maintained the schedule of daily meetings and added daytime meetings, as well as one for Australians. We also hold regularly scheduled officer and committee meetings and maintain a website with informative links and archives of prior business meeting minutes.

--- DIRECTIONS TO CONNECT TO #SLAA CHATROOM with AN mIRC INTRODUCTION ---

The following is detailed instructions for downloading, installing, and using mIRC to connect to the #SLAA Online Group. mIRC is a program for the Windows Operating System. Macintosh users may use ircle or java from their browser or other IRC software programs specific to Macs. Some PC users use a program called Pirch or X-chat, but that is not addressed in this correspondence.

If you are familiar with mIRC and know your way around, simply change your server to a StarLink-IRC server and connect to any of those servers (See list below). Be SURE it is a StarLink-IRC server and not plain StarLink. This is the most common error made in connecting. Once on a server, just type: /join #SLAA. Please find additional information about SLAA online at our website https://www.angelfire.com/on/slaa or about SLAA Fellowship Wide Services at their website http://www.slaafws.org.

If you have never used mIRC, read on for program acquisition and getting started. The program is a short download, easy to set up and use.

1) LOADING and USING mIRC (this is for IBM-PC compatibles using Windows)

This short section is just to get you started. It's primarily for people who know nothing about mIRC. If you want to get deeper into its working, the help section is pretty good. There is also a lot of assistance on each server in the mIRC channels and help channels.

1. Getting onto mIRC. The best place to obtain the program is at http://www.mirc.com. mIRC is one of the best programs and the latest version is mIRC 6.03 (but changes occassionally). Download the .exe file from the site and when finished click or double-click the .exe file to set up mIRC. Make sure you know where your downloader will store the program. Instructions are explicit. It's a short download and an easy, short set up. By default, the program will install into a C:\MIRC directory, which is fine.

2. Next, click on the icon on your desktop or in the MIRC folder that setup program arranged. This will open the program. A window "mIRC SETUP" will open with a column called "Category" on the left. Make sure "Connect" is highlighted. Enter your FIRST NAME ONLY where it says Full Name (it is recommended you only use your first name or a false name for the sake of anonymity). Enter your FIRST NAME ONLY where it says your e-mail address (again for anonymity). For the nickname and alternate nickname, we suggest you use your first name and last initial with no spaces (such as JohnD or JaneQ) and an alternitive (such as John_D or Jane_Q).

3. Still in "mIRC SETUP" window, on the "IRC Servers" line will be a line window that says All, select Starlink-irc from the pull down menu. Do not confuse Starlink or StarlinkOrg with Starlink-irc as they are two different IRC server groups. Then look at the line window below and open the pull down menu. Only StarLink-IRC servers should be listed. Select one and press the button to "Connect to IRC Server."

Only if there are no StarLink-IRC sites, you will need to add them manually by clicking on the Add button next to these windows. The window that opens is named "mIRC Add Server". Put in a description that begins with Starlink-IRC such as StarLink-IRC:Houston. Doing this for each server will collect all StarLink-IRC server sites in a group on the pulldown menu in the previous "mIRC SETUP" window. Add the IRC Servers from the list below exactly as read in second column. IE: Houston.TX.US.StarLink-IRC.Org. Click the ADD button for each server. Put the Port in using 6667 if that line is blank, however all servers connect on ports 6663 to 6669 and 7001, so you can type "6663, 6664, 6665, 6666, 6667, 6668, 6669, 7001" using the commas but not the quotation marks. For each one, type starlinkirc for the Group and leave the Password blank. Click OK. Repeat to add several servers in case your favorite is busy. Always try to use a server close to you. You can connect to StarLink-IRC through the following servers:

/MI /server ROCHESTER.MI.US.StarLink-IRC.Org
/TX /server HOUSTON.TX.US.StarLink-IRC.Org
/PA /server BROOKVILLE.PA.US.StarLink-IRC.Org
/NM /server ROSWELL.NM.US.StarLink-IRC.Org
/WA /server MOUNTVERNON.WA.US.StarLink-IRC.Org
/BC /server WILLIAMSLAKE.BC.CA.StarLink-IRC.Org
/NS /server YARMOUTH.NS.CA.StarLink-IRC.Org
/UK /server BIRMINGHAM.WM.UK.StarLink-IRC.Org

Close the "mIRC Add Server" window and you will be back in the "mIRC Setup" window. You will find all the servers you added now in the pulldown menu. Select whichever server you wish and then click "connect to IRC Server" button. The mIRC connect loads and you will be logged into the server you selected with its status window open.

It is recommended you select a server nearest to you unless it is busy. Avoid using overseas servers as the risk of splits and disconnects increases dramatically. A split occurs when one group or a single server loses its connection to the other StarLink-IRC servers. Eventually they may be reconnected, but the two groups remain separate from each other until rejoined.

4. To join #SLAA simply type /join #SLAA on the bottom typing line in the status window. You will now join #SLAA and the first thing you will see is our welcome banner listing meeting times. When you see this banner you will know you are in #SLAA. Even if it isn't a regular meeting time, you might find other recovery friends simply "hanging out." One name you will always find present is CStar; this is not a person, but rather a computer "bot" so don't be offended that IT doesn't talk to you.

2) TYPING

Simply typing on the bottom message line while in channel will deliver a message to the entire channel.

Next - double left clicking on a persons name while in a channel will open a private message window. Simply type your message on bottom line.

/MSG <nick> <message> can be used anywhere and will send a private message to the nick you indicate. I.E. /msg rickb Do you have a few minutes to help me? This style does not open a window. You do not have to be in a channel. It will appear in the window to the person to whom you are trying to message.

3) COMMANDS

There are several ways to communicate in IRC depending on whether you are in a channel. When a / is indicated it must always be at the start of the typing line.

/JOIN #slaa - once you've installed mIRC, this is the command to use on future launches to join the SLAA channel.

/join <#channel> - is the way to join any other channel. Also there is a channel folder in the menu bar. By adding your favorite channels you can click the channel you wish to join. There are other recovery rooms such as #saa and #sca that meet at different times, as well as many other non-recovery rooms, such as help rooms.

DCC (chat) - sending a DCC message can be done by clicking on the DCC menu item on the main mIRC32 menu and selecting Chat and then filling in a name. Or by selecting DCC Chat after left clicking on a name while in a channel from the popup menu. This chat opens a window and provides protection from splits and even some disconnects. It uses mIRC to establish a direct connection.

DCC (send) - offers a second type of DCC. If you wish to send any kind of document, sound (.wav or .mid), file or a picture use "DCC send". Once again, select or type in a name, select the file from the appropriate directory with the selection window provided.

/list - provides a list of all visible channels on the server. Double clicking a channel will allow you to join that channel. The recovery rooms (like #SLAA) are NOT visible channels to protect anonymity. You must use the /join command to enter such rooms.

/me <message> - delivers a message that describes an action, usually in a light purple color, to differentiate from a normal message. It automatically places your name first before the message.

/whois <nick> - delivers all the available information about someone. If you want to report any kind of abuse or inappropriate behavior, this information will be very helpful to either the channel or the IRC server operators.

/nick <newnick> - changes your nick to the "newnick".

There is voluminous information available at the mIRC site http://www.mirc.com and from the help menu which is rather good. Also many servers have great mIRC help channels and are more than willing to provide assistance. If you need technical assistance once connected to StarLink-IRC, the two channels that are most often attended by staff are #channels and #terranova (these rooms are NOT for recovery chat).

4) STARLINK-IRC INFORMATION (You can likely ignore this section)

The best resource for StarLink-IRC Information is their website - http://www.starlink-irc.org, the mIRC channels #channels for administration of CStar and Channel Service, and #terranova for general help and administration assistance.
