Summer Camp 1998
The weather couldn't have been
more perfect, and the site for the Shorin-Kan Karate Dojo Summer Camp couldn't have been
better!
Friday
night started off with an intense workout of Kihon (basics) and elementary Kata (forms).
Students main focus was the necessity of physical conditioning as well as proper
body mechanics when executing techniques. Saturday morning saw the campers awake at
dawn to meditate for 20 minutes on the banks of the man made pond. Next on the
agenda was morning run to work up an appetite for the campfire breakfast. The rest
of the day was divided into two
hour
sessions, consisting of basic kata (Fukyugata ichi and ni), Pinan Kata, Pinan Bunkai, Bo
Kata and, as a special treat, a Shito-Ryu Sensei instructed the students in kata and
applications. The day was also interspersed by lectures from Mr. Frank Baehr,
Rokudan, chief instructor of the CSKF. Sunday morning began once again with 20
minutes of meditation. A general review of Saturday's material followed, and
then back to work on the Pinan Kata and its applications. More work on the Bo was schedule
led for the afternoon followed by a junior kyu
rank testing.
Of course, it wasn't all work! Many of the students managed to escape the heat and cool off at the pond between classes. Much fun was had by all and the fellowship shared among the students has continued to strengthen.
