The Old Grey Cat
"The Old Grey Cat" - fiddle tune by Ruthie Dornfeld, found in the
Mel Bay fiddle tunes book, edited by Stacey Phillips. Ruthie does mostly
American folk, old-timey, and bluegrass, but her tunes usually follow the
old modal harmonies of the old music of the British Isles.
This arrangement is for fiddle, rhythm guitar, bass, and pedal
steel, and is dedicated to my 15-year-old grouchy tabby Alexis, who, by the
way, hates music.
NOTE: this sequence uses stretched pitch-bend ranges, because I
like the cool slides on the pedal steel and fretless bass. This is
officially Kosher, according to the minimum General MIDI spec, BUT the very
common SoundBlaster16 cards do not respond to the MIDI messages to widen
pitch-bend range beyond plus-or-minus 2 semitones. Hence the sequence will
sound off-tune (i.e., an intended slide up a fifth will only go up a second)
on SB16s and clones of same.
FURTHER: the sequence resets to default power-up pitch-bend at the
end. So if you don't want to play it through, skip to the last measure and
play it through to the end.
