Long-Term Care and Retiree Issues

email:  ltcgal@aol.com

The cost of a long term care need could be the biggest threat to one's assets.  On average, today, one year in a nursing home costs approximately $50,000.  With an average stay of nearly 2.5 years, the costs begin to add up.  It is estimated that by the year 2030, annual nursing home costs could reach $190,000.

Roughly 43% of those over age 65 will need long-term care at some point.  But this care does not affect just the elderly.  It also has an impact on family and friends who must find the time and the resources to care for them.

Many mistakenly believe that Medicare will pay for long-term care.   This is a misconception.  In fact, Medicare pays for less than 20% of long-term care costs.  And while Medicaid picks up nearly 40% of the tab, one must be at the poverty level in order to qualify.

Since 1987, Susan Wright has specialized in providing education and information on long-term care and other financial issues facing retirees and those approaching retirement.  Susan has written several informational pieces on these topics, and has been a presenter and guest speaker on a number of programs.  Ms. Wright is a member of the Society of Financial Service Professionals and of Toastmasters International.
