Show Report: The Horseshoe, Toronto
Greasing the Star Machine CD Release party
September 19, 1998
My first trip to the Horseshoe. Found it, and parking too, with little difficulty.
Anyways, got there nice and early, got a couple copies of the CD, and a poster too. Quite a large crowd was packed into a small place to see the show, but it was worth the heat and lack of personal space.
This was, by far, the best sounding Nails show I've been to. Best, that is, until a couple monitors blew, and the audience couldn't hear the saxophones for a few songs. But all was fixed pretty quickly, and the rest of the show sounded terrific!
My hilights of the show:
- found out the name of the one song Ron does solo is called "Small Victories". It is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard, and it amazes me that at every show I've heard it at, idiots in the crowd start chatting just because it's quiet. I personally don't know how anyone could not listen to it. But oh well.
- as opposed to other shows I've been to, where the guys might be playing to people who are there because it's their regular hangout, or even to see the opening act, everyone at the Horseshoe was there to see the Nails, and I think the crowd's enthusiasm was reflected in the performance.
- line of the night: after apologizing for promising a new CD for so long, Ron said, "You know, we've got so much new material, I think we'll have a new one out by February!"
