Show Report: The Hudson, Hamilton
November 20, 1999

The Rusty Nails made their third trip to the Hudson on Saturday. The place was as packed as a show in Hamilton is gonna get, and I got to meet a few of the regular visitors to this page! The crowd was appreciative but subdued, cuz us internet geeks aren't known for getting up and dancing.

The set featured a few Star Machine favorites: Suffer Me (introduced as their 'smash hit' single), Suffering in Mink, Psycho/Superstar, Strange, Venice, Be My Alibi, and the less-often performed Ghostwriting.

The 2-part set drew heavier, though, from the large amount of unreleased songs that we're all familiar with. The boys ran through Crackstatic, Partners in Crime (one of my favorites, and I'm glad it still made the set), Convenient, Turpentine (my hands-down favorite, guess I'm a hillbilly at heart), Who's Gonna Drop that Bomb?, Roja, Beat Me Senseless, Euphoria, Big Blue Devil (which actually got a few people to dance!), and Terminal City. I was eager to hear the newest songs, and wasn't disappointed as Guttering, and Little Backstabber were both played. LBS is quick, while Guttering is slower, but both are incredible.

The encore featured a rare performance of Subversives (first time I've ever heard it in all the shows I've seen), and Lawrence on vocals for Another Nail For My Heart. I believe the show went a lot longer than the past few I've seen, and the guys seemd to have a blast the entire time. The songs were as tight as ever, and it still amazes me the range of material the Nails can play, and play well. They are all certainly skilled musicians, and they make it look so easy!

My hilights of the show:
- got to chat a bit with Lawrence before the show. My advice to everyone is to enjoy having the band (relatively) to ourselves right now, there's no way that the Nails won't be huge by this time next year!
- the band is full of amazing Tim Hortons and donut trivia, which I appreciate as a Hamiltonian!
- Convenient was re-tooled a little again, this time the instrumentation at the end is more 'rockier', for lack of a better word.
- a good samaritan was incredibly nice enough to bring me tickets to the New Year's gig. Thank you again!

Rusty Nail gigs are bookending the crazy holiday season at work for me. Christmas hours start the day after this show, and end the day of the New Year's Eve show. Thanks, Rusty Nails, for getting me through my last (God willing) Christmas in retail!
