Show Report: The Brig, Port Dover
Saturday July 4, 1998

A convenient show for me to see, as my girlfriend lives 10 minutes from Port Dover. Who'd have thought something interesting would be happening in her neck of the woods?

Got to the venue around 9:30 pm, just in time to hear soundcheck. The doorman told us it was going to be a late show, due to some blues show going on down the road (imagine, 2 concerts in Port Dover on the same night!). Figured it'd be a while before the guys took the stage, so we went upstairs to shoot some pool.

Around 10 pm, I hear the band playing again. Discover that their set had begun! I thought they were headlining, so we made a mad dash to catch the show. Only missed Taboo.

Hmmm... something wasn't quite right about this place. We soon realized that we were the only paying customers there! Altogether, there was the band, two guys with them, and a couple people playing pool in the back. But that was cool, we had the band all to ourselves. When they finished their song, Ron asked us our names, and introduced us to the others in the house. Pretty cool!

My hilights of the show:
- the sounds was great. Surprising, since there was nobody in the place to absorb it!
- got some info on the new cd, can't wait until September now!
- Pokerface is on the new disc, but unfortunately Convenient isn't. Oh well, maybe the next one.
- they played Psycho Superstar! They hadn't played it the last 2 times I saw them, I was afraid they had cut it from the setlist
- after the show, Lawrence came up to us and thanked us for showing up early. We got to talk to him for a bit, which was very cool.
- Mark the drummer had to go to the bathroom, so Ron did a song by himself. It was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard! Now i've got this urge to go see one of Ron's solo acoustic shows
- they finally have a song now that Lawrence plays harmonica on
- got myself a spiffy new Ron Hawkins and the Rusty Nails t-shirt!

By the end of the show, some other people had finally showed up. All I can say is they missed a helluva show. Even though the guys were the opening act (which they are too good to be, in my opinion), they still did a 2 hour set, and played all the songs I hoped to hear, plus (as always) a few ones that were new to me. Of course, I didn't stick around to see the headlining act, I don't know any band that could follow the Nails.
