They say that love is blind.
Well, obviously!
It was right underneath their noses!
Had been there for 6 years.
Now it was getting tired.
The course of true love never did run smooth.
But one sweet day it had never been smoother.
Mulder and Scully were in their little cubicles, doing background checks. They both longed for the good old days when they could be out on the open road, searching for little grey men.
Even Scully had to admit she missed her time alone with Mulder. How could they possibly have their intimate conversations, get closer to each other, when they were around the other agents?
Just then, Mulder's phone rang.
He was expecting a call from a man in Dallas whose wife had been murdered, so he unegarly picked it up.
It was Skinner. Mulder spoke quietly into his phone for a few seconds, then said to Scully,
"We've been called into Skinner's office."
She nodded and stood up.
"I wonder what this is about." Scully said.
"Is she scared?" Mulder asked himself. He gently tapped her back. "I'm sure everything's fine." He told her, unsure himself.
Again, Scully nodded and added a classic, "I'm fine."
It seemed that everytime Scully muttered those two little words, Mulder became very aroused. Over the years, the line had become more of an inside joke and an assurance. Mulder wished that Scully would open up to him more. He knew that even though she looked so strong, so tough, that deep down inside her there was no way on Earth that she was fine. He wanted to hold her, hug her, make everything fine.
"C'mon, Mulder." Scully said, snapping him out of it.
Mulder knocked on the door and opened it once he heard Skinner's "Come in!"
Scully seemed to freeze and Mulder had to push her forward towards Skinner's desk.
"You wanted to see us, sir?" Mulder asked.
"Yes. You are both very successful agents. With all the new agents coming in from the academy, if you two don't do well on your next assignment, I'm going to have to separate you." Skinner explained to them.
Mulder and Scully stared at each other in horror. The kind of shock when you learn that someone has just died, the painful glance that makes it known to all the world that things will never be better again. Things weren't fine, and Scully's words couldn't fix it.
"What?" Scully asked in a voice barely above a whisper, speaking for the first time since she entered the room.
"I'm sorry. I hate to do this to you, but I have no choice." Skinner said soberly. He handed Mulder a case file. "There have been several reports of UFO sightings at a night club in Chicago. Three people have been reported missing, or you might say abducted. I've gotten you a flight to Chicago this afternoon."
Scully looked at Mulder in distress, begging him with her eyes to say something.
"Yes, sir. Thank you, we'll get right on it. And don't worry, we won't let you down." Mulder said finally.
"Let's hope that you're right." Skinner said, and Mulder and Scully left the room.
When they were out in the hall, Scully ran her fingers through her hair.
"Ugh!" She cried in frustration. "Mulder, we can't let them do this!"
"Geez, Scully, after all these years I thought that you couldn't wait for the day when they re-assigned you." Mulder joked.
"Mulder, this is not funny. You've taught me how to believe. How to trust. I never, ever want to lose that. But if I lose you, I will."
Mulder stepped a little closer to Scully and was about to reach out and pull her into a hug, but just then, A.D. Cassidy stepped into the hall and they remembered where they were.
"Let's go pack." Scully said quickly and Mulder nodded.
A few hours later, Mulder and Scully were on a plane to the windy city.
Mulder and Scully sat next to each other, heads bent over the case file.
They both looked up at the same time after reading something rather disturbing and found themselves nose to nose, in the perfect position for a kiss. But they knew better, and went back to the file.
"Hey, Scully," Mulder said as the plane was landing.
"Yeah?" Scully replied.
"Whaddua say we go undercover tonight?"
"What?"
"C'mon, this could be our last case together. Might as well have some fun."
Scully raised her eyebrows and smiled a light, devilish smile as she nodded.
Mulder and Scully checked into a hotel and went their separate ways into their rooms to change.
Scully ran like the wind down to a clothing store where she beat her record and picked out a dress in fifteen minutes. It wasn't all that hard. The dress was slutty but gorgeous. It was black and open around the top, the sleeves beginning halfway down her arms. Scully teased her hair and pulled on those three-inch heels she always wore to make herself look taller.
Mulder, on the other hand wasn't in such a rush. He had decided before they left that even if he lost Scully as a partner he was not going to lose her. He took a shower and put on his black jeans and T-shirt, throwing a black leather jacket over it. Then he dabbed on some cologne that Scully really seemed to like. Then he went across the hallway to Scully's room to pick up his date. When Scully answered the door, he had a bouquet of roses in his arms.
"Hey," He said. "You look beautiful."
"Thanks." Scully managed to sputter as he handed her the roses. "I'll get my coat."
"Either Mulder's taking this undercover stuff really seriously or he's hitting on me, and I really hope it's the second one." She thought to herself. "He smells really nice, too."
As they entered the nightclub, loud music was blasting from the speakers and people were dancing the latest moves. At first, Mulder and Scully felt really out of place. Most of the people there were in their twenties, while Mulder and Scully were in their thirties. But as soon as they began dancing, everything fell right into place. Soon, Mulder and Scully were the centre of attention on the middle of the dance floor, totally turning up the heat. Scully slid down Mulder's body sexily and Mulder had to stifle a moan. After about four songs, they were both exhausted and Mulder bought Scully a drink. They used the opportunity to look for anything suspicious.
"The problem with going undercover is that you can't question people." Scully whispered, and Mulder nodded.
"I know. We just have to look for what's not there."
"Story of my life." Scully mumbled.
They walked into the dark storage room and saw someone - or something - moving in the shadows.
"FBI! Freeze!" Mulder screamed, grabbing is gun as the figure broke into a run. It ran into Scully, knocking her to the ground.
Mulder quickly helped her up.
"You okay?" He asked.
"I'm fine." She said, and Mulder couldn't help but groan, blushing deeply as Scully's deep green eyes widened at him. Then they ran after the mysterious figure who had ran on to the dance floor.
"You cover him from the back." Mulder shouted to Scully.
"No, I'm staying with you." Scully said with fear in her voice.
"Scully, what's the matter with you? You've got a gun, you'll be fine. You do have a gun, don't you?"
"Where the hell would I put it?"
Mulder sighed and motioned her to follow him.
Everyone seemed calm as Mulder and Scully ran through the crowd.
Drunk, but calm.
All of a sudden a young woman ran past to Mulder and Scully.
"Help! Help! Someone help me, please!" She screamed.
Mulder grabbed the woman's arm.
She gave a little yelp.
"Miss, we're FBI agents. Is there anything we can do to help?"
"Dan! They took Dan!"
"Who's Dan?" Scully asked.
"Who's they?" Mulder asked.
"D-Dan - he's my boyfriend. And they is them." She said, pointing into the sky. "He just, disappeared sort of."
"Miss, are you a member of MUFON or some other sort of group?" Scully asked.
"What do I look like, some kind of nut?" She asked. "Are you going to find my boyfriend or not,"
"We're going to try. But we need to know what the person or thing who took him looked like" Mulder said patiently.
"Well, we were over by the bathrooms and all of a sudden there was this bright light. This shadowy figure took him and ran off towards the alley, I suppose. By the time the light went away, they were gone." The woman explained.
"You stay with her. I'm going to go search the alley." Mulder told Scully.
"No, Mulder, it's too dangerous. Gun or no gun I'm coming with you."
"Scully. Listen to me. I'll be fine. Now I want you to stay here."
Scully tightened her jaw and gave Mulder a Look, but finally gave in.
Mulder patted her on the shoulder and ran outside towards the alley.
Mulder ran out towards the alley and found three guys beating up another one.
"Federal agent!" Mulder cried, pulling his gun on the men.
However, it didn't faze him. The three men already had their guns out and two of them pointed their guns on Mulder while the third kept it pointed on the man.
"Looks like we've got another suburb boy to beat up, guys." The first said.
"We already got one," The second said, knocking Mulder's gun out of his hand. "Whatdua say we just kill him?" The guy said, sticking his gun to Mulder's head.
All of a sudden, out of no where another person came kicking at the second man's back, knocking him on to the ground away from Mulder and sent his gun flying into the night.
Scully.
The first man had managed to tie Mulder up against some old wood and was now coming towards Scully.
"Eh, girly-girl," He said. Mulder cringed when the man called her 'girly-girl', hoping that Scully wouldn't be caught too off guard from the remindance of Donny Pfhaster. Luckily, Scully didn't seem to notice. "That's a nice dress for fighting, Red." Scully swung a left jab at the man but he ducked. "Oh, FBI Woman's got an attitude." That was enough for Scully. The only person who was allowed to call her FBI Woman was Mulder and no one could get away with it. She hit him right in the stomach and threw the third guy of her back onto the ground when he came at her back. She handcuffed them to a pole and then went to check on Mulder.
"Are you okay?" Scully asked, examining his head.
"I'm fine." Mulder said with a sly smile and Scully untied his hands.
Then Mulder called for help as Scully examined the man who had been beat up.
An hour later, Mulder and Scully headed back to the hotel. Mulder hadn't said a word since Scully had untied him. He rushed into his hotel room trying to close the door but Scully stopped it and followed him in.
"They're gonna split us up, Scully! I'm never gonna see you again!" Mulder cried.
"Mulder! I know you're upset, but sometimes when it seems you couldn't be further from the truth is when you get the answers you want most."
"Scully, I, I need to talk to you."
"Okay."
"Listen, um, when they put us together we were meant to be enemies - maybe friends if they were unlucky. But this goes deeper than that now, and all the times that you've been taken away from me, I just wanna make sure that I never lose you again."
"Oh, Mulder. I love it when you get possessive. I want exactly what you want."
"It's been so long since somebody whispered-"
"Shhh...Shut up and kiss me."
There was lots of love that night.
Lots and lots of love.
The next day, Mulder and Scully headed back to D.C., feeling refreshed despite the lack of sleep they had gotten the night before. The first thing they did when they got to work was go to their meeting with Skinner and Cassidy.
"Well, you both did rather well on your last assignment, we feel it's the least we can do to let you stay together and give you back the X-Files." Cassidy said.
Mulder smiled, his mouth dropping open. This was the best day of his life! The girl he loved and his files, too. It was probably the best day of Scully's life to but she didn't show it as much.
"Excuse me, ma'am, how was our last case related to the X-Files?" Scully asked, not really caring.
"There was a strange protein code in the blood left behind at the crime scene that matched the criminal's blood. We had no choice." Skinner said reluctantly.
"Thank you." Mulder and Scully chorused.
"Also, we would like to inform you that while you were out of town the other day, a no-holding hands policy has been passed after two agents we caught engaging in inappropriate activities." Cassidy said.
"Who?" Mulder asked, stifling a laugh.
"That's none of your business Agent Mulder." Skinner said. "That will be all."
Mulder and Scully walked quickly into the hall and burst out laughing.
"I wonder who it was." Mulder chuckled.
"I'm just glad they didn't catch us in Chicago. That would have brought on another policy." Scully said, giggling.
"Wanna celebrate?" Mulder asked smiling, wanting to hold her but knowing he'd get in trouble if he went near her.
"Sure. What'd you have in mind?"
"Well, there's a nice night-club down the block..."
