Chapter 22

I sat in the room next to Tara. My hand was limp, holding hers. My eyes were closed and I rested my head lightly on the chair I was in. I felt a slight tug on my hand.

"Sophia, I'm hungry." Tara's tiny voice said. It sounded almost foreign coming from the body I once knew to be so happy and energetic.

"I know. The nurse will be here soon with food." I said comfortingly.

Tara nodded her head in acknoledging my statement. "So, have they told you anything else?" she asked timidly.

"Well, they have a few more tests to run, and they said you should be out of here by the end of the week. Their main concern is that you figure out what you are going to do with the baby."

"Well, my mom thinks I should abort it, but I don't think that's right. You're murdering someone by doing that. It hurts me to think of the life that could have been, and would've been, had it not been for someones selfish thoughts and actions." Tara said.

I agreed with her completely, but decided to keep my personal opinions out of it. "Well, have you considered adoption?"

"I thought about it, but I don't know. I'm afraid I'd spend the rest of my life wondering where my child was. If he was safe, sheltered, clothed, fed?"

I sighed. "So, basically what you are saying is that you want to keep this baby?"

"I don't know what I want anymore." Tara sighed, exasperated as her head fell back onto her pillow.

"But Ike!" Taylor half shouted. "Why not?"

"Taylor," Isaac said as calmly as possible, "you are being completely unreasonable. You are in no position to do this. Please think about it before you make any definate decisions."

"Isaac, it's not like we don't live together. We already share a life together. Marrige is simply a way of reinforcing that love. I want to spend the rest of my life with her. I love her so much. I can't lose her, and I'm afraid that if I wait much longer, I might." Taylor said.

"Why do you think that? Don't you know that she loves you, man? She's stuck by your side for the past 2 months through this whole thing and been there for you even before that. She sacrificed her life to have your baby, when she could've simply had an abortion. If that's not love, please tell me what is! I just wish you would wait until after you are both out of school. I think mom would be much happier if you did."

"Isaac, I can't wait." Taylor looked truly distressed. "I'm sick of waiting. I want to marry her. I want to be with her and show her how much I love her and how nothing could ever change that."

Taylor's words struck a spot in Isaac's heart that softened him. "Well, if you really think it's the right thing to do, I will support you." He sighed.

Taylor's face lit up. "Thanks Ike."

There was an awkward silence. "Oh, and Ike...one more thing...will you be the best man?"

"Of course." Isaac smiled at Taylor, a real smile that lit his face up completely.
