Chapter 2

I walked down the hall toward my locker. "I just don't know what to do, Sher." I said to my best friend Sheralyn, who was walking beside me.
"I think you oughta tell the police." she said as she brushed her long blond hair. Sheralyn was the kind of person whom I'd ever told about how my father treated me. I knew she cared about me, but she could never understand the things that I went through. She had the perfect family; a mother who didn't work, a dad who made loads of money, and a cute little sister. She lived in a huge house in the most expensive part of town and had a wardrobe the size of a clothing store.
"I can't! He'd kill me." I said to her.
"Should I highlight my hair?" she asked, changing the subject.
"Sheralyn!" I said, exasperated. I decided to drop the subject; we obviously weren't getting anywhere.
"What, you don't think I should?" she asked, looking insulted.
"No I think you should."
"Me too." she agreed with a satisfied smile. "Will you come with me when I get it done?"
"I guess so." I said flatly.
"Yay!" she said, clapping her hands.
I looked at my watch. "I gotta go."
"Okay, I'll see you at the concert on Sunday."
I waved slightly and began to walk away. I hated lying to her, but I wasn't in the mood to discuss her hair for the billionth time that day.
"Hey Gabby." a voice from behind said. I spun around to face Zac.
"Hi." I said. "What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be at baseball practice?"
"We don't have practice on Fridays." Zac told me.
"Oh yeah."
"Well...I was wondering if you wanted to come over and play video games at my house for a while?" he asked shyly.
"Sure, I have nothing better to do today."
"Great. " he smiled. "Well, lets go. My brother's out front waiting and getting impatient."
"Okay." I said.
We walked out to the front of the school where a green Honda was sitting. We crawled in the backseat. His brother looked a lot like him, with darker hair. "Hi, I'm Isaac." his brother introduced.
"I'm Zac's friend Gabriella." I replied.
The ride to Zac's house was a short one. We turned into a driveway that was littered with skateboards, rollerblades, bikes, and other various toys.
"Home sweet home." Zac said as we exited the car.
As we entered his house, the sweet aroma of fudge brownies reached my nose. "Mmmm..." I said, sniffing the air.
"My mom's famous browines." Zac told me. "We'd better get some before Taylor gets to them or there won't be any left.
I laughed. "Who is Taylor?"
"My other older brother."
A little boy of about 4 was sitting at the kitchen table when we walked in. "Zaccy!" he yelled when he saw his brother. The little boy ran over and gave Zac a hug with every ounce of energy he had.
"Hey buddy." Zac said, rumpling the little boy's hair. "Mackie, this is my friend Gabriella."
"Hi Gabwiewa." Mackie said, sticking out a little plump hand.
I shook it gently. Mackie giggled and then ran off. Just then , a women with long blond hair walked into the room. "Hi Zac."
"Hi mom." he said. She looked at me. "Hi, I'm Diana." she said, smiling warmly.
"I'm Gabriella." I said. "Zac asked me to come over and play video games."
"That's fine." Diana said as Zac dropped his bookbag on the floor and grabbed my arm.
"Zachary!" his mother said warningly.
"Yeah?" Zac turned and looked at her innocently.
"Your bag does not go on the floor."
"Ooops!" he said, grabbing his bag and yanking me toward the den.
