Antennas are a vital part of your radio system, if an antenna isn't working properly then your communications will be severly affected. Most radio operators will tell you that the antenna is the most important part of the hobby. You can have the most expensive radio available but it won't operate properly unless your antenna is working.
To keep your antenna system running good, you should have monthly inspections.(some operators even due weekly inspections!)and you should inspect antennas before and after a storm.
Atleast once a month, if you can, you should check your antenna system and:
Installing an Standing Wave Ratio [VSWR] meter is also another way to keep your antenna system in good condition.A VSWR meter is also used to properly tune your antenna system. The VSWR meter is sold at most electronic / radio stores and installs between your transmitter and your antenna via coxial cable The VSWER measurment should never be higher than 2:1
If you have a mobile radio, you should try to use a magnetic base mount antenna so that it can be removed and placed in the trunk when your are not in your car. Mobile antennas nont only alert thieves that there is a radio in the car, but antennas themseleves can be subject to theft or vandalism.Every few days remember to clean and dry the surface on which you put the mag-mount antenna.
