Did you know that a compound subject made up of two or more singular nouns joined by and is usually plural?

Careful thought and close attention to detail are essential for effective writing.

Oh no! You can't be serious! Robert Billy-Bob Shabanu the grammar Czar says that there can be exceptions to this rule!

The verb will be singular if: two nouns name the same person or thing, OR If the two nouns taken together are thought of as a unit.

E.G.: A husband and father has an obligation to share the domestic chores.

Bacon and eggs is a popular breakfast combination.

And if you still find yourself wanting to use a singular verb after a subject consisting of two singular nouns joined by and, give your head a shake: you probably have used two nouns that mean virtually the same thing!! Duh.

If you are doing this stop it now before Robert Billy-Bob Shabanu beats you silly!

The strength and power of his argument is undeniable
