Participles

Whoa! There are two brothers here. One’s name is Present Participle. He ends in ing He loves the Adjective Posse!

EXAMPLE: Soaking in the bath, Tim noticed his reddened and swollen ankle.

(reddened and swollen modify ankle!)

The other brother is Past Participial. He ends in ed. He likes the Adjective Posse too!

EXAMPLE: Painted houses require more care then brick ones.

(painted modifies houses! What kind of house? A painted one!) Gerunds

If he ends in ing he is hanging with the Adjective Posse and becomes a Present Participle, but if he tries to be a hommie with the Noun Posse keeps his cool name, GERUND! Whoa! Isn’t that CRAZY?!?!?!

EXAMPLE:

Present Participles- It was a moving experience.

(What kind of experience? A moving one!)

Gerund- Moving furniture can be hard work.

(Moving what? Furniture!)
