BMW M5 (E39)

BMW M5 Sedan, Wagon and M6 Coupe and Convertible

In the fall of 1997 there was a big suspence about the new M5... That is until the Frankfurt Auto Show where BMW displayed publically a prototype of the new super sedan... While waiting for that unveiling, I tried visualizing what the new M5 could look like. Below are pictures of what I came up with... But last generation of M5 was also sold as a touring in BMW speak which translates into a sporty station wagon. So I figured it's a matter of time before BMW would market such a bodystyle of the new M5. Since the new, limited edition roadster/coupe based on the Z07 showcar will be very expensive and targeted at the Mercedes Benz SL, I also figured there is a good chance BMW will intorduce a cheaper luxury coupe based on the 5-series... It seems very likely since Mercedes Benz will sell 8-cylinder version of CLK (CLK430) and BMW said they won't put 8-cylinder engines into the new 3-series, therefore they could use a coupe bigger than the 3-series... That's where the 6-series would come in. That coupe could be either be very closely related to 5-series but feature longer hood and fenders, more sloped front windshield and back window and specific rear light clusters.  Or BMW could take a more drastic approach. It seems though that BMW is on a very conservative stage now so a mid luxury coupe would be a good guess to look like the 4-door. Hence I decided it would be interesting to see such a car... Of course in the M Motorsport trim. Finally, BMW did build a prototype of a BMW M5 convertible on the E34 chassis, so if they would build 6-series, a convertible is yet another possibility...

Now I present you with BMW M5 sedan, M5 wagon, M6 coupe and M6 convertible. This family of E39 cars would be available in three 'M' flavours. The Sport (Shadowline), Luxury and Evolution. Sport would be the base model with available cloth interior, "Shadowline" option and M style mirrors. Luxury trim would be available with option of full size outside mirrors, navigation system and the leather interior accented with wood instead of Sports aluminum. Luxury model would also ride on 18" BBS wheels. Finally the Evolution model would feature further performance enhancements, velour and leather interior trim accented with carbon fiber and it would be distinguished on the outside by the 19" Touring Car Racing inspired multispoke alloy wheels.
