I must admit that 2002 will not be remembered for cinematic brilliance. In fact, there really was no clear cut BEST FILM, as far as I'm concerned. However, there were a few standouts. In no order:
Adaptation(Spike Jonze) Writer Charlie Kaufman follows up Being John Malkovich with a tale that defies narrative structure, but becomes a study on motivation and passion.
Bowling For Columbine(Michael Moore) - Mr. Moore makes the most important commentary on American society. He asks all the right questions, but no answers are given.
Thin Red Line(Terrence Malick) -Being able to be in THE MAN'S presence down at University of Chicago was awe inspiring.
Lost in La Mancha (Louis Pepe & Keith Fulton) - A comic/tragic documentary of a doomed production. However, it somehow becomes a picture of determination.
Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner)(Zacharias Kunuk) - The finest Canadian film in ten years, is a timeless yarn that transcends language and culture
Russian Ark(Alexander Sokurov ) -A directorial triumph, makes me want to learn Russian
Y Tu Mama Tambien(Alfonso Cuarón) Mexico is proving to be the hotbed of international cinema right now
A Skin Too Few - The Days of Nick Drake(Jeroen Berkvens) -The tragic tale of Nick Drake
Far From Heaven(Todd Haynes) - A wonderful homage to the melodrama of the 1950's. Julianne Moore is awesome.
If I Should Fall From Grace(Sarah Share) - An unflinching look at the lead singer of The Pogues...and what has become of himself and the world around him
