I must admit that 2001 will not be remembered for cinematic brilliance. In fact, there really was no clear cut BEST FILM, as far as I'm concerned. However, there were a few standouts. In no order:
Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain(Jean-Pierre Jeunet) Who thought that the guy that made 'Delicatessen' could make such a beautiful film. OK, fine it was THE best film of last year!
Memento(Christopher Nolan) Totally playing with the medium!
Mulholland Dr.(David Lynch)The Master of Weirdness is back, and freakier than before! I still have no clue what that film was about. But in a good way.
Ghost World(Terry Zwigoff)The Director of 'Crumb' makes another film about comics, and makes a bold statement. Captures humour, cynicism & hope like CATHCHER IN THE RYE. Thora Birch rocks!
