Dear Friends,

I commend you today as you begin the Global Peace Walk 2000.

This coast-to-coast walk will highlight the importance of bringing
people together and working toward global nonviolence.

In San Jose, one of our greatest strengths as a city is our diverse
population, which is a source of pride both for me personally and
to the citizens of San Jose. As the walk leaves San Jose,
please take with you the message that a city that celebrates
its sense of community along with its diversity holds promise
for peace both locally and globally.

It is also fitting that you begin your journey on Dr. Martin Luther King's
birthday. As you embark on Global Peace Walk 2000, celebrate
Dr. King's legacy, passion, and vision toward a future where character,
not color, determine a person's worth.

Sincerely,

[signed]

Ron Gonzales
Mayor
