2 CONT 6. Richard French, born in Topsfield, Aug. 18, 1676, called husbandman 
2 CONC and yeoman in deeds, removed to Enfield, Connecticut, as early as 1699. 
2 CONC He held no office in Topsfield, but his name occurs frequently on the 
2 CONC Enfield records. He was chosen fence viewer, three times, surveyor of 
2 CONC highways, three times, allower of town debts, twice, tythingman, four 
2 CONC times, assessor, once, constable, once, and served on different 
2 CONC committees a number of times. March 21, 1739, he was on a "Comtee to 
2 CONC Dignify ye Seats in ye meeting house according to the rules following: i. 
2 CONC e. they shall adjust age usefullness Quallification and offices with the 
2 CONC Last three years Lists" (History of Enfield, vol. 1, p. 388). He was also 
2 CONC an "Alower of Society debts, May 12, 1632" (Church Records, vol. 2). He 
2 CONC was called Corporal, Dec. 15, 1730, and "Sargeant," March 10, 1734/5.

2 CONT Some time after removing to Enfield, June 7, 1711, he sold to Ebenezer 
2 CONC Averill of Topsfield a tract of upland in Topsfield, twenty acres more or 
2 CONC less, "a good perfect and Absolute Estate of Inheritance in fee Simple," 
2 CONC for ¶20 (Essex Deeds, 25 : 76).

2 CONT On June 5, 1699, Ephraim French conveyed by deed of gift to his "cousin" 
2 CONC (i. e. nephew), Richard French, "all my housings and lands at Enfield 
2 CONC after my death... He to live with me and maintain me." (Hist. of Enfield, 
2 CONC vol. 3, p. 1973.)

2 CONT Ephraim French, who had been in Enfield as early as 1687, died there in 
2 CONC September, 1716. Under date of August 29, 1720, the records state that 
2 CONC Richard French is "possessed of a parcel of upland that Came to him by 
2 CONC right of his uncle Ephraim French." In 1731 he conveyed to John Meacham 
2 CONC fifty acres "originally belonging to the Grant of my uncil Ephraim French 
2 CONC decd.(*)

2 CONT Richard French's wife's name was Elizabeth (???), She was born about 
2 CONC 1680, according te her gravestone inscription, --"Here lies the Body | of 
2 CONC Mrs Elizabeth | French wife of Mr Richard French | who Departed this life 
2 CONC April the 30th | 1752 in ye 73d Year | of her age."

2 CONC March 1, 1664/5, when a daughter born there, first mentioned in town 
2 CONC records on Dec 31, 1667, when land was laid out to John How, "next John 
2 CONC ffrench bordering upon the Common", from that time until 1697 his name is 
2 CONC found frequently. He was chosen surveyor of highways, or fences, or both, 
2 CONC seven times, tythingman, three tiems, on jury at Ipswich, three times, 
2 CONC grand juryman, three times, and commissioner on special errands to the 
2 CONC "sheare Towne," twice. He built a one story house about 1675, which 
2 CONC before 1798 was raised to two stories and enlarged. This is still 
2 CONC standing, and is known as the "French-Andrews" house, located on Howlett 
2 CONC St., near the Dry Bridge [Topsfield Hist. Coll., vol. 8. p. 22, vol. 6,

2 CONC Thomas French, were granted liberty to "clear and break up a parcel of 
2 CONC land at Scott's hill to have two acres each for six years upon condition 
2 CONC that they sow four bushels of good hay seed on every acre, to keep up the 
2 CONC fence a year so that the English grass should get head, the hay seed to 
2 CONC be sown with the last crop" [ EQC 3:271]. 
2 CONT    In his will, dated 3 August 1680 and proved 28 September 1680, "Thomas 
2 CONC French Senior of Ipswich ... being weak of body" bequeathed to "Mary my 
2 CONC beloved wife the bed whereon I used to lie, with all the appurtenances 
2 CONC and furniture belonging thereto"; to "my son Thomas French" clothing; to 
2 CONC "my son John French" one cow "to make up the full sum of £30 which I 
2 CONC formerly promised him for his portion"; to "my daughter Mary Smith" one 
2 CONC cow; to "my son Samuel French" a bed and bedding; "my sons Thomas and 
2 CONC Samuel French" in consideration of £20 paid to "my son Ephraim French" as 
2 CONC the remaining part of his portion, "my two sons Thomas and Samuel" shall 
2 CONC receive the Pequod lands and division lot of marsh to be equally divided 
2 CONC betwixt them; to "my son Thomas French" my dwelling house and homestead, 
2 CONC also my lot in Labour-in-vain fields of twelve acres, also the rest of my 
2 CONC cattle, stock, and moveable goods; to "my son Samuel" two acres of upland 
2 CONC and two acres of meadow at Reedy marsh; "my son Thomas French" to give 
2 CONC free liberty to "Mary my wife his mother" to dwell in the said house and 
2 CONC to make use of any room or rooms thereof for her convenient accommodation 
2 CONC ... likewise ... any such moveables as I do now leave in the hands of my 
2 CONC son Thomas"; after her [Mary's] decease, "my son Thomas" shall deliver to 
2 CONC "my three children John, Samuel and Mary" three of the biggest pewter 
2 CONC dishes; "my two sons Thomas and Samuel" to provide for "their mother's" 
2 CONC comfortable maintenance, and if she is not satisfied, they to allow her 
2 CONC £9 paid by Thomas and 20s. paid by Samuel annually; and if she suffers 
2 CONC sickness and the aforesaid £10 does not suffice, "my two sons Thomas and 
2 CONC Samuel" shall supply her with necessaries and my lot in Labour-in-vain 
2 CONC fields and two acres of meadow at Reedy Marsh shall stand bound 
2 CONC respectively to my said wife during her natural life as security for the 
2 CONC true performance of this my will as respecting her maintenance by my two

2 CONC totalled £217 15s. 6d. including £150 in real estate: "his dwelling house

2 CONC land at Labor in vain," £60; "two acres of land by Scotes Lane," £10; and

2 CONT " Thomas was baptized 27 Nov. 1608 at Assington, Suffolk, England. He 
2 CONC came to New England with the Winthrop Fleet of eleven ships carrying 
2 CONC about 700 colonists, which sailed from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, in April 
2 CONC and May, 1630, and which arrived in June and July following. The first of 
2 CONC these ships landed at Salem on 13 June. Thomas French first settled in 
2 CONC Boston and presumably was married there about the next year, 1631. His 
2 CONC wife is identified only as Mary. Thomas French was made a freeman of the 
2 CONC colony on 6 Nov. 1632. About 1634 he moved to Ipswich and appears there 
2 CONC on record first in 1635 in the following land records.
2 CONT 20 April 1635-There was Granted to Thomas Scott...Likewise an hous lott 
2 CONC in Mill Streete havinge Thomas French on the Southeast.

2 CONT 20 Feb. 1636/7--There was granted to Serg. French ten acres of upland at 
2 CONC the hither end of a Neck lying beyond Reedy marsh, to be laid out by the 
2 CONC lott layers. Granted to Serjent French, a parcell of upland and medow 
2 CONC containing about three acres on the South side of th River, adjoyning his 
2 CONC planting lott.

2 CONT Thomas took the Freeman's Oath in Boston 6 Nov. 1632. He was in Boston 
2 CONC when, "this 17th of the first month Called March, 1634" John Stratton 
2 CONC wrote to John Winthrop, Jr. "in Aggawaam per Jno. Gallopps boate" that "I 
2 CONC have putt my sister a suite of Moyheare to making att Goom. Frenches, she 
2 CONC were best gett the taylor to take her Measure and send per Jno. Gallop." 
2 CONC (Winthrop Papers, Vol. III, pp. 156-7). Agawam, later Ipswich, had been 
2 CONC planted by John Winthrop Jr. and twelve others in 1633). From this, and 
2 CONC from a 1647 deed, we know he was a tailor.

2 CONT [10]: There is no record of Thomas and Mry's marriage, but seven children 
2 CONC are known, the conception of the first is consistent with a marriage in 
2 CONC MA in 1631.

2 CONT In the name of God, Amen. I Thomas French Senior of Ipswich being weak of 
2 CONC body yet of perfect understanding and memory doe in case of death make 
2 CONC this my last Will and Testament. In the first place I commend my Soul 
2 CONC into the hands of Almighty God who hath redeemed it by the precious blood 
2 CONC of his Son; and I commit my body to the Earth, whence it was taken, to be 
2 CONC buried in a Christian decent manner by my friends in hope of a blessed 
2 CONC resurrection to eternal life. And as for my outward Estate which God
2 CONT hath graciously given me in this world I doe thus dispose of it:  
2 CONT Inprimis, I give and bequeath to Mary my beloved wife the Bed whereon I

2 CONC and free libertie to Mary my wife his mother to abide ad dwell in the 
2 CONC said house and to make use of any room or rooms thereof for her 
2 CONC convenient accommodation therein; as likewise to make use of all or any 
2 CONC such moveable as I doe now leave in the hands of my son Thomas (not 
2 CONC disposed of) as my be necessary ad convenient for her use and occasions 
2 CONC from time to time; and all these during the term of her natural life, and 
2 CONC after her decease my son Thomas shall deliver to my three children John, 
2 CONC Samuell and Mary three of the biggest pewter dishes which shall then be 
2 CONC left and remain that is to say, to each of them, one. Provided also, and 
2 CONC my will is that my two son Thomas and Samuel doe carefully provide for 
2 CONC their mothers comfortable maintenance and livelyhood and what is requisit
