Mari's 23rd birthday had some definite excitement. She came to the hospital to see her Grandpa. Max had his leg amputated mid-calf due to diabetes complications. Mari arrived in the middle of an all staff effort to save Max's life. His blood oxygen level had fallen to 38. It is supposed to be 90-100. Praise the Lord, Max is still with us and improving daily.
Mari decided to host her own birthday party in Stillwater a week later, requesting the presence of her friends but no presents. To see pictures of her party, go to: http://silvermari.tripod.com.
Marilyn Perry is our 2002 Rising Communications Scholarship winner from Oklahoma State University. A native of Indiahoma, OK Marilyn is a senior at OSU majoring in news editorial. She is copy editor for the Daily O'Collegian, the OSU student newspaper, and has attended an honors Authors course at Oxford University in addition to a political journalism institute at Georgetown.A gifted student, she has accumulated numerous academic honors including the presidents honor roll, Regents distinuished scholar and Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Academic All State. She is in the honors program at OSU and is currently working on her final thesis regarding the portrayal of women in MTV primetime programming. This research is important because it will add impartial evidence for the debate of whether the shift of American cultures and values is a good thing. She may continue her research in graduate school and eventually join the ranks as a professor of journalism or magazine editor. It is obvious she is well on her way to achieving her goals as she has already interned for American Enterprise magazine in Washington, D.C. and is the web designer and newsletter editor for the OSU student chapter (of AWC, Association of Women in Communications).Marilyn's accomplishments and contributions at OSU have been noticed. One of her fans, Mike Sowell, an assistant professor in the Journalism and Broadcasting department said this about Marilyn. "Marilyn is very mature for her age. She has the intellect, the leadership abilities and strong desire to succeed that will make her stand out in any setting."These qualities are why we have selected Marilyn Perry as our 2002 scholarship winner. |
