SANTORINI

Santorini consists of three islands: Thira, Thirasia and the Aspronisi. Santorini, one of the best-known of the Cyclades, differs from the other islands in the group thanks to its geological morphology, the result of action by a volcano now dormant. The landscape on the western side of the island, where towering cliffs crowned by tiny and blindingly- white houses plunge straight into the depths of the sea. The steep coastline of the west is countered by the vast beaches of the east side, some of them sandy and others with pebbles. From the landing-place, Skala, we can climb up to Fira, the capital, on foot or on donkey-back. There is a funicular railway for those who wish to avoid the hundreds of steps. Fira is very attractive, with winding narrow streets, arcades and a quarter where the Catholic nobility once dwelt.

Beaches In the east coast there are Monolithos, Kamari and Perissa. In the south coast there are Perivolos, Ai Giorgis, Eksomitis and Blihada.Beaches near Ia are Armenis, Ammoudi and Mpaksedes.

Sports Windsurfing. If you don't have your own surfboard, you can rent one on the island.

Night Life Everything you could ask, you'll find it here. In Fira you can find buzukia, discos bars, pubs and a cinema. In Ia, Kamari and Perissa you can find bars, pubs and discos. At Imerovigli, Emporio and Pirgo Kallistis you can find buzukia.

Transportation There are various ferries from Piraeus and a ferry from Ios took about….. and cost….

Opinion/our experiences The main ferry port in Santorini, has not got that much to offer, except a few tavernas and cafes. Once taken up the mountainous road heading towards Thira it is more developed. Again this time we intended to stay in Thira where it is all happening, but this time we wanted a swimming pool. We found a place that had one for 14 pounds a night each, slightly more expensive from what we had been paying, but it was what we wanted so we splashed out! We were staying on the edge of ________ a small village about a mile from Thira. We didn’t mind, but it was about 15 minutes walk uphill to get to the bus stop to get in to Thira. Although for what we payed it was good value, we had an apartment with 4 single beds, a kitchen and a bathroom, just for the two of us with a swimming pool just round the corner. Thira itself has much to offer, it has a small port at the bottom of a very step cliff edge, where most of the tours go from, there are many restaurants and tavernas and the nightlife has much to offer, and slightly more spacious than Ios! For things to do here, it is a must to see the volcano and hot springs, you can get various packages and there are good student discounts. Our trip cost us about ___ for the day. We walked to the top of the volcano, which I must say was a bit of a let down, as it was just a lump of ask, no hint of activity. Although the hour walk to the top nearly killed us the view was worthwhile.

Then our boat took us to the hot springs where we could swim. This was a completely new experience, there was a distinct musty/metal smell and the water was orangey/brown. I was reluctant to get in, but after being told it was good for the skin, I thought I would give it a go and pleased I did. Although after getting out a didn’t feel much different. One thing I must say about this trip was that don’t take any clothes you like too much, because they will only get ruined from the dust from the volcano and the sulphur from the hot springs. Then we were dropped back to the port and got donkeys back to the top. Although we walked down, as we left plenty of time, I didn’t fancy the walk back to the top, the walk down took us nearly an hour! There are three main beaches in Santorini, a black, red and white beach. We visited the black beach in ______ which was another bus ride away, but really nice once a arrived. The area was really pretty with lots of restaurants, especially seafood along the front. Although the beach as you can expect was a bit of a let down, black, lots of cobbles and the sea was not that pleasant to swim in. Overall I would say that Santorini had it all, beach resorts, nightlife, things to do, but for me I felt that you spent so much time traveling it wasn’t as relaxing and convenient as some of the other islands we visited, although definitely worth the visit.

Accommodation Name: Address: Tel: Cost: Rating: I would rate this hotel 6/10. Although we were given so many facilities, the location for us was not practical, although the walking made us a lot fitter!
