Course Objectives
- To recognize theories of social, emotional, and language development
- To understand research-based information about social, emotional, and language development.
- To critically evaluate current research and apply research findings to practice
- To identify cultural issues surrounding social, emotional, and language development in children
- To develop objective observational skills of children's behavior focusing on the social, emotional, and language development of children
- Demonstrate understanding of the developmental consequences of stress and trauma, protective factors and resilience, development of mental health, and the importance of supportive relationships
- Develop skills and understanding for serving as advocates on behalf of young children and their families, for improving the quality of programs and services for young children, and enhancing professional status and working conditions for early childhood educators.
- To recognize signs of emotional distress, child abuse and neglect in young children and know the responsibility and procedures for reporting suspected abuse or neglect to appropriate authorities.
