LEECH AND MALCOLM ARE AT HALL'S FLAT.
HALL: Well, when you arrived, I was going to beat you with a stick, but now you've told me what the police said, I am shocked!
LEECH: I know! I mean, I'm guilty when it comes to deceiving Caroline, but drugs......I don't understand how my name got on that list.
HALL: Wait till my wife hears about this. She'll be very shocked.
LEECH: We know that you don't have a wife. There's no need to lie anymore.
MALCOLM: Alice died in March 82...
LEECH: ....and you still believe that she is living here, you wait for her to arrive home from work, and when she doesn't, you phone the police. The police told me about this before they interviewed us, that is how I found out that she is dead.
HALL: I think it is time to tell you the whole story from the beginning, when my wife Alice died of heart disease in the Spring of 1982, my Caroline was only 11 years old, it was a great loss for both of us. That is why I became a doctor, whenever I saw someone in pain I wanted to help them, I didn't want them to die like poor Alice.
LEECH: How sweet.
HALL: But the pain of her death didn't go away, I was so upset I started a gambling obsession. On Caroline's 16th birthday, she couldn't have any birthday money because I had gambled away all my money in Las Vegas. However, Caroline had £400 in her personal money bank, she said that she would take money out for me, so that this wouldn't happen again. All the money I own now comes from her bank account, I am not allowed to make any transactions!
LEECH: And then you met me...
HALL: When my daughter married Walter Yates, one of the richest men in Britain, the amount of money in her account went up drastically. This wasn't long before I met you Gail. When you came along and told me you were in pain, all I could think about was Alice moaning in pain from her death bed, I just had to cure you...
LEECH WEEPS.
HALL: So I robbed my daughter of £500, she found out the same day, and told me that I could take it if the patient was worthy of it. When the mix-up occurred, she seized the chance to test your worthiness, and she phoned me the second after you left to go her brother-in-law's house. When you arrived here with the money to say goodbye, I assumed that you'd passed the test and was allowed the money! After you left, Caroline phoned to say you hadn't passed the test. I want respect from my daughter more than anything, so I told her I'd... get the money from you and give it to her. So...er...you better hand it over...
LEECH: (shocked) Oh OK, I suppose if I kept it your daughter would hate you forever.
LEECH HANDS THE MONEY OVER.
MALCOLM: OK, that's the whole money thing sorted out, but what about the drugs? We all know the accusations are a load of rubbish, but there is no evidence to disprove it! The penalty for trafficking of drugs is life imprisonment! We could all go to jail!
LEECH: No evidence. If only I had kept my Judy Matthews Clinic booking receipt, that would prove that I was going to the clinic and not a drugs base.
HALL: How did Gail's name get onto that list? We'll never know.
THERE IS A LONG PAUSE.
LEECH: I have a theory, maybe the lists got mixed up by post. Things like that always happen, the list for the clinic went to the drugs base and the list for the drugs base went to the clinic!
MALCOLM: That means many innocent people all over the world have been arrested!
LEECH: Exactly.
HALL: But wouldn't the police realize there has been a mix-up if the clinic received lists with things like "prepare 1000lbs. of drugs for so-and-so" ?
LEECH: Maybe the drugs base list got lost by post... damn!
MALCOLM: That's it! The clinic list got posted to the drugs base, and the drugs base list got lost by post... damn, then there's no proof that the people on the drugs base list are innocent. It'll take years for them to find the lost letter, and when they do, they'll probably burn it.
LEECH CRIES LOUDLY.
LEECH: Then we'll all go to prison! (screams)
HALL: I have an idea, we'll make up a drugs list and post it to the clinic, then the police will realize there has been a mix-up and that'll prove you innocent. The fact that you have a bad leg will further prove that you were going to go to the clinic and not the drugs base!
LEECH: Perfect, let's make a list of gangster type names and addresses, I will find some American names and addresses from the library and pick out the ones that sound "gangstery"
LEECH CHUCKLES.
