SOIL FOODWEB TOUR
New Zealand MARCH
2002
Thank you for
your interest in this great event, the importance of understanding the
soil and its functions has never been more important to NZ agriculture
than currently. Every week this is highlighted by some news event or other.
Dr Elaine
Ingham, with some 20 years research is the person to give us all a far
deeper understanding of the full soil story, its implications and its potential,
more importantly Dr Ingham can show us management practises we can all
use to optimise the production of our land while having the minimum impact
on the environment.
The areas
covered in the seminars relate to all involved in agriculture/horticulture;
A balanced Soil
Foodweb will:
1. Suppress disease-causing
and pest organisms
2. Produce good
soil structure, improving water infiltration, oxygen diffusion, and water-holding
capacity.
3. Retain nitrogen
and other nutrients such as calcium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, etc.
4. Make nutrients
available for plant growth at the times plants require at the rates plants
require.
5. Decompose
plant residues rapidly
6. Produce hormones
that help plants grow.
7. Consume pollutants
in the soil.
The days are structured
to fit the type of operation you operate;
