![]() Name:Ben Nichols Location:Richland, WA Car:89' CRX Si ColorRio Red Other Info: 82,000 miles Original engine All stock but intake His Story My interest in CRXs' became apparent when I owned a 1979 Buick Regal Coupe. It was my first car, and I bought it when I was 15 for 200$. By far, it was the worst investment I've ever made, as cars can be. My stepfather and I set out to "restore" the car. It was the beginning of summer in 1998 when we decided to do so, we got it in running order, and put new floorboards in, painted and restored the 301 Pontiac that it came with. Overall, the car looked okay. It wasn't even a car that I thought looked good, but it was all mine... and I couldn't even drive. Frequently, my friend Brett and I would go online, and check up on cars that we wanted to buy. He was VERY into Honda's, and I thought "Imports suck!". Reluctantly, I sifted through many Honda ads. Since he didn't have much more over 5,000$, we decided to go for Hondas that were made between the years of 88-91. After a while, we found a car that he hated, the CRX. I thought he liked all Hondas!! Oh well. I fell in love with this akward looking car, 2 seats and all. Soon after this, I set out to buy one. No money in hand, I looked. How could I get money?? Sell the Regal. But my stepfather was purely American based, and would NEVER let me buy a Japanese car. So, I had to destroy the Regal somehow, so I could get this.. my new dream car. What I am about to tell you, has to be the single stupidest acts to gain a car you've heard, but... in the end, I get the car!!!! My friend Brett and I were driving down an unassuming road, at a very safe speed. I had stopped at a red light, and put it in first gear. I revved the engine, and waited for the green light. Keeping it in first gear, I took off as fast as she could go, all the way up to 45 MPH. It must have been an act of God, but at that time, the engine seazed, and locked up. I had sealed this cars fate, and soon.. would I have my CRX!!! Although I knew very little about this car, I KNEW that I wanted one. I never really had payed attention when I had seen one in person. The Regal got towed back to my house, and my stepdad tried to crank the engine manually, NO luck! (for him, but for me.. it was extrodinary luck). Shortly after this, he decided that I needed either a new car, or a larger engine. Since I HATED working on this car, and showed it with how slowly I did it, I told him that I wanted a new car. I worked up the balls to tell him that I wanted a Honda... and after that.. a CRX. We went out to look, and the FIRST CRX that I looked at, was mine. It was a 1990 DX, burgandy in color, she had 143,000 miles, rust.. the whole "Midwest" early 90's car look. And I bought it for 1,200$. This left me for no money for the modifications that I wanted. Back then, you could call me "rice". I wanted a window banner, and lowering springs. I went to an Import Store, and damn.. they told me to get RID of that car and get an Si. I didn't even know of the different models. That summer, I visited my dad, in Washington state, from my mom's in IL. He offered to buy me a car for 3,000$. I KNEW I could get an Si for that. After the months between that guy at the Import Store telling me that my DX needed to be ditched... I had learned A LOT about my car, through the CRX Resource. (http://resourece.crx.org). And knew my car sucked. I sought out for a CRX, and the FIRST one that I looked at again... I HAD to have. It was a 1989 Rio Red Si with only 67,000 miles on her. Bad news.. it was 7,000$ and the guy wouldn't budge an inch. I haggled down to 6,000$, and it was mine. My dad payed for it all (don't know HOW I got him to double his allowance!!), but it was mine. For about a year, I owned both CRXs. Went to High School in the DX, and in the summer, took the sunroof down with the Si. Currently, I own only one CRX.. my Si. Thanks to Ben for sending this in!! Major props to you man! |
