The First Book of Swords
CHAPTER TWO
From the place where he had come upon the dead warbeast, Mark walked steadily upstream. He traveled the riverbank in that direction for another hour, still without meeting anyone. By that time he was feeling acutely conscious of the blood dried on his clothing and his hands, and he stopped, long enough to wash himself, his garmets, and at last the sword as clean as possible. The washing had limited success, for by now spots of his brother's blood had dried into the shirt, and there was no getting them out by simply rubbing at them and rinsing them with water. The sword in contrast rinsed clean at once, dirt and gore sluicing from it easily, leaving the smooth steel gleaming as if it had never been used. Nor, despite all the shredded chainmail and the cloven shields, were its edges nicked or dulled.
That was, if you hadn't guessed, a small piece from the First Book of Swords. This book revolves around the time when Swords were new to the mortal realm and just becoming discovered. The main character in this book is a boy by the name of mark. This boy was born just after the swords were forged. His father, Jord, was one of the mortals taken to assist in the forging of the blades. He was also the only one to return alive, though he had lost his arm to the god Vulcan before returning. Being a just god, however, Vulcan gave him an exchange, leaving him with the Sword called Townsaver, or the Sword of Fury, in place of his arm. For several years Jord and his family survived, the Sword hung on the wall in decoration. But others were by now beginning to unveil the power of the Swords, and this made Jord and his family a target. One day men finally came for the sword, over a dozen years later, and it was Chaos. The Sword of Fury acted out, protecting those it needed to, but not saving Jord or Mark's older brother from the hell that it brought. When the dust had settled, mark was the only one left, save his mother and sister. That eventful day also marked his eternal leave from home, holding the Sword of Fury at his side as he left by his mother's commands. The rest of this book follows Mark and others, such as his Mother, his father (whom he believed dead) and the cruel Duke Fratkin. If this has caught your intrest, you should seek out the remainder of the book in a more solid form, for I may have given away too much as it is.
