Summer-Time Must Have's

    - John Frieda Highlight Activating Shampoo and Instant Conditioner ($5.99 each, available at drugstores): These two products are essential for girls who highlight their hair with blonde, dye their hair blonde, or just plain have blonde hair naturally. The shampoo and conditioner brighten the hair and keep color from fading. It also makes your hair look very silky!
    - Parfums de Coeur's Apple Fantasy Moisturizing Shower Gel and Sheer Lotion Spray (at drugstores): These body products will clean and soften your skin like nothing you've tried before. They also have the yummiest apple scent around!
    - Clinique Almost Makeup SPF 15 (at department stores): Clinique's Almost Makeup goes on like a liquid foundation, but doesn't cake or look fake. It's a very natural looking product that you can go swimming with and not worry about it running or doing anything funny.
    - Bath and Body Works Cherry Vanilla Lip Balm SPF 15 (at Bath and Body Works stores): This lip balm does more things than any other one on the market right now - it moisturizes your lips and leaves them smooth and shiny, tastes and smells great, and protects your lips from those damaging UV rays! What more could you ask for?
    - Bain de Soleil Streak Guard Sunless Tanning Cream (at drug stores): I've found that this product works better than much more expensive ones, for less of a price! It darkens your skin about two shades darker than what it naturally is, and is easy to apply. The gel-ish substance is tinted brown, so you can see where you apply it. It lasts for about three to six days without re-application. This is a must-have for summer!

There is one problem I'm sure all of you have had to deal with...especially out on the field, court, or at competition. And that is shine. Yeah, it can be great when shine applies to lip gloss or hair, but when it comes to your face, most people prefer to loose the greasy look. It can be even harder to have a smooth, shine free face when you are sweating and excercising out in front of a rowdy audience.

There are numerous products out there, to bust shiny faces, ranging from liquid mattefiers, special shine busting makeup, powders and even blotting papers. I have road tested a whole bunch, and I am here to let you know what measures up, and which works best for different people.

Loose, Translucent Powder- ( Cover Girl, Cornsilk ) available at your local pharmacy. This powder lacks color, so it blends with most skin tones naturally. As a plus side, it does absorb shine great, but the effects can only last for a few hours. Less if you are really shiny. It isn't extremly portable, because it doesn't come in a slim compact, and it can be messy, because it is loose. Ideal for application before a game or competition.
Liquid Mattefiers- (Clean and Clear). This product is available at your local pharmacy as well. It can be applied to your face using fingers or a cotton ball, and is a smooth lotion that dries to a matte finish. It is best applied under makeup. While it held up great during a normal school day, this type of shine-buster needed some help from loose powder during a game. Because it isn't travel-friendly, you should put this on before leaving your house.
Blotting Papers- These are great for your purse because they are small and come in a tiny booklet. They absorb shine that is already on your face, but don't prevent it from coming back. Brands include Cornsilk and Clean and Clear, but can be found at (surprise) your drugstore. As a bonus, they come in handy for little emergencies on dates or at school.

The bottom line, try some of these out, and see what works for you. For next month, I'm doing a little survey. For those of you who have tried out budgeproof lipstick brands, and like or dislike a particular kind, email me your opinion. Thanks!

Uniforms -

Uniforms are part of the style that is unique to each squad. Nowadays there are so many choices when it comes to choosing a uniform that fits your squad's individuality. They key is finding one that is right for your squad.

Skirts alone come in the classic pleated style, flyaway (where the pleats separated like flaps, and aren't sewn together on the sides ), flyaway with cutouts (at the bottom of each flap, there is a cutout of a shape, such as a star or diamond ), or A-line, with no pleats or a few in the front, and a basic straight shape. The flyaway and a-line are relatively new styles, and are gaining popularity. Flyaway skirts are show more skin than the other types, but as long as bloomers or hot pants are worn underneath, they are really not inappropriate. Many schools may have problems with the fact that they show more skin so when choosing a flyaway type of skirt, make sure your athletic director or school principal okays the choice.

When picking a top for your school uniforms, keep in mind you want something cool. When you are out on the gym floor or mat and working it, it doesn't matter how stylish your uniform is if you are dying of heat. Shells are a good choice for indoor cheerleading, because they have no sleeves and are a lot cooler than the sweater tops or long sleeved tops. If you are soccer or football cheerleading, however, long sleeved tops will be your best bet. Bodysuits can be worn underneath shells, for competition and a cleaner look than the shell itself gives. If your top is midriff-baring, then a cropped bodysuit can be used.

As far as guy's uniforms go, warm up pants or shorts with a uniform tee or top can be purchased from many catalogs, such as Cheer and Dance Association, if you have a hard time finding them. There is no reason why the guys can't have uniforms that look just as professional as the girls, so look into a catalog or uniform provider that offers a wide selection of guy's uniform choices, if you are a coed squad and are currently having trouble.

Eyebrow Plucking -

It's not a good idea to rub ice on the area where you'll be plucking. A lot of people do this, but it's simply a mis-conception. If you numb with ice, all that will happen is it'll be harder to remove the hairs come pluck time. So just try to bear with the pain (if there even is any after you learn the correct way to pluck!).

To find out the proper shape that you will need to sculpt, try this nifty way. Remember to mark off the spots with a one centimeter mark of eyeliner right on the skin. Place a pencil along from the bottom corner of your nose to the inner corner of your eye. Where the pencil crosses the eyebrow is where you should pluck until. Next, place the pencil from the corner of your nose to the outer corner of your eye. Where the pencil meets your EYEBROW is where you should pluck until on the outside. Also remember to tweeze any stray hairs underneath the brow. To tweeze, I reccomend the Sally Hansen La Cross Tini-Tweeze Precision Control Tweezers. Make sure you pull in the direction the hair grows. Grab as close to the root of the hair as you can (without grabbing your skin accidentally - ouch)! Best of luck!
